Collagen for osteoporosis?
My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

Has anyone tried any of the OsteoNaturals? They are Dr Keith McCormick’s products.
I am 80 years old and have never taken any drugs for Ostro and I have two doctors opinions one for Prolia and second for Reclast. After researching I don’t like any of those choices. I was told that Collegen doesn’t help. I am considering not taking any drugs. My osteo is borderline and I do lots of exercise and I Square danced for 25 years. I have never had a fracture but I can’t find any doctor that doesn’t want to subscribe drugs. Any comment and good luck.
I have advanced osteoporosis (-5.1 T Score) at age 72, so I have made radical changes to diet and lifestyle. The first collagen I took was Applied Nutrition liquid collagen (Costco). I had to trust it was helping my bones, but the astounding thing was within days the arthritis in my fingers was no longer painful. There had been years of wearing compression gloves at night, using a mitt that I kept frozen to ease the pain, etc. There was no longer tightness in the morning and the pain was gone. So, hopefully, the bones are benefitting too. I alternate between the liquid collagen and one I order from Dr. McCormick, whom I consulted for osteoporosis. His product is Osteonaturals.
That sounds awful. If you haven’t already, please contact Dr. McCormick to let him know. Yes, it’s very possible you could be taking too much potassium, magnesium, or something else with all the supplements you’re taking vs. stomach flu, food poisoning, dehydration, etc. Feel better soon!
Well I know that I haven't been able to take as much pure magnesium powder as is usually recommended in the past (as in I had to take one scoop a day instead of two) and I also get very sick to my stomach whenever I have Whey protein. This was made using goat's milk, so I was hoping it would be better. So, both may have contributed. It took me years to discover that although I do have some lactose intolerance, it is the whey protein in milk that really makes me sick. In retrospect, I should have known to start with a much lower dose than he recommended, but I wasn't thinking as clearly as I should as we're in the final stages of selling one home and moving into another right now, and it's all just a little overwhelming. Thanks for replying to me!
Oh, Kathleen~
Sounds like you're really feeling relief from what you're taking. How wonderful to experience relief from your painful arthritis. I'm now 79..and have been taking the same collagen for all these years..(codeage)...I hope the same results for myself. I haven't had another Dexa in a year or so. When I do get one..I will post the results.
If you have had pain because of your T-score..has that also gotten better? Hope so!
Take care now!
Bunky44,
I just ordered collagen from OsteoNaturals. I am hoping that it will help my bones and my arthritis.
Has anyone tried any of OsteoNaturals other products?
I take Dr McCormack's as well.
Yes. Just started. IDK if it is working. I am also in contact with Dr McCormack who is counseling me.
Sorry about the nausea. Wondering what type of magnesium you are taking. Magnesium citrate will cause loose stools if taking a high dose so I'm just wondering if that might be the culprit. Magnesium Threnate should not have that bowel effect so might be a better choice for you if you're not already on it.
Wondering what dose Dr McCormick recommended to you to build bone if you don't mind sharing. Just thought I'd pass along that if your gyno objects to HRT, as many do, you might want to look into Alloy Health. They are an online pharmacy service, geared toward menopausal women and bioidentical hormones. They have doctors on staff that will evaluate your history and current health status to determine your dose. That service is free but if you want something more in depth, they charge $35 for a consult with an MD. They use the FDA approved bioidentical transdermal estrogen. They are a great service for menopausal women since many doctors will not prescribe and insurance often won't cover.
