The Strontium Debate: Is it good for bone health?
Is anyone taking strontium for bone health? My husband is reading studies on its benefits. I am currently getting Prolia injections 2x/year.
***Director's Note:***
There’s not enough clinical research to know if strontium citrate effectively prevents or treats osteoporosis. Mayo Clinic does not recomend its use. Clinically researched osteoporosis medications have demonstrated fracture prevention benefit with less risk.
The FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.
If you wish to take a strontium supplement, it is advised to discuss with your doctor.

2 ReactionsI have read that strontium works too slowly for severe osteoporosis. And since it replaces calcium in bone, and is denser, it can throw off DEXA scans and make things look better than they are.
I had severe osteoporosis with fractures. I have been told and read (my doc and Keith McCormick's new book "Great Bones") that it is better to do a bone builder first. Tymlos, Forteo and Evenity are bone builders.
My doc follows up with a bisphosphonate like Reclast or Fosamax. He avoids Prolia because it is so hard to get off, without a plunge in bone density. Reclast does not have that problem.
I chose Tymlos because the dose is adjustable. I started low to let my body adjust. I also have varied the dose at times. I had great gains with 3/4 dose for 18 months.

1 ReactionI am not the original poster and I did start algae cal but I cannot tolerate any calcium supplements and didn’t do the strontium boost at the time. However I am a retired medical professional and researched the literature. I found a Canadian study using Micronutriens: strontium citrate, K2,, D3 , dietary calcium only and a couple of others I forgot.
I couldn’t tolerate Forteo, Fosamax. Since I’ve been on steroids a long time I was eligible for a bone density test more frequently; one of them showed osteoporosis after years of osteopenia. I followed the test protocol that employed strontium citrate. This improved my bone density into osteopenia despite being on prednisone for many years. Because I developed atrial fibrillation, I was put on heart meds. I stopped the s citrate because I didn’t know if there was an issue. My endocrinologist decided to give me Prolia but I really felt unwell after the second dose and came down with shingles despite having the updated vaccine within the last year. This was 10 days after the prolia shot and there is a study going on to see if there’s an association. I decided to resume the strontium citrate mg 340 milligrams with the approval of my endocrinologist and primary physician who is a geriatrician. In all of the studies using strontium citrate fractures were less. I add, due to my other comorbidities polymyalgia rheumatica and muscle weakness, I cannot do strenuous exercise though I do what I can. I will do one Reclast next month because of the Prolia. So far no fractures at 83.

6 ReactionsMy cardiologist advised AGAINST taking Strontium due to my Afib and heart conditions .
I have been taking Algae Cal for about 3 months and NativePath for about
a year and my Dexa scan gave me worse results from last year for my Femoral Neck. My lumbar improved a little.
I upped my exercises, and magnesium.
So I can’t speak for any benefits of these products.

3 ReactionsWow. This is first I have read about strontium & arrhythmias. I see my cardiologist in August and ask his opinion. Thanks, Meri.
I have been on AlgaeCal and Strotium Boost close to two years.
Fosamax for two years did not help. Went from Osteopenia to Osteoporosis.
I’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis several years ago and looking forward to next Dexa scan in August.
I do not have Afib or heart issues.
So far no fractures and still active at 74

2 ReactionsI’ve just begun using Algae Cal Plus, but chose not to use the Strontium, because it has the downside of making bones appear to be denser on a Dexascan. Strontium replaces the Ca in the bones, and it is a heavier molecule than Ca.
