Right hip replacement

Posted by youbgsterinva1953 @youbgsterinva1953, Sep 14, 2023

I’m having my hip replaced in one week on 21 September’23 will the pain get better, because I can hardly walk anymore and I used to walk around with no problem. I refuse to admit I might be getting old but I don’t want to. I’m a young 70

I had THR on my left hip on Sept 22.
I am still in the recovery process. They have you up on a walker almost immediately after the surgery. The pain meds will keep you moving easily the first several days, but will probably mess up your stomach and intestines. For me, the constipation was not worth it. The soreness set in for me after I went off the tramadol. Still taking Tylenol and Aspirin. I am not able to step without the walker yet and am still pretty sore. Doing my walking, PT, icing, as directed.
One other issue has been that my operated leg is a little longer than the other and it throws off my alignment. My therapist says it may resolve when the swelling goes down. Eventually, I expect to be back to activities and golf, but it is slow going right now.

Same experience for me after THR IN July. The Oxy of one really shut me down with bowels and I only took 2 doses. Also the surgical leg seems a bit longer, but at least I was warned about that. Getting RHR November 1 so hopefully by next year I’ll be able to do fun stuff again. This year has been hard.

Did your legs even out? If not, how are you compensating?
Best of luck on the second one. Maybe they will be the same length after the second one is done, if it has not evened out since your first replacement.

I imagine you are pain free by now

I had a great Dr. had my RIGHT THP done in 2006...no problems after!Things I can't do.....cross my right leg over my left knee( figure 4) or RUN....everything else....no problem! After the operation...you wake up & you will feel the ball (new hip) & wonder....will I fell this forever...answer is NO...that feeling goes away! JUST WALK IN THE HOSPITAL...at first with the nurse help....then with the walker....WALK!! Don't YOU hurt had the nurses going NUTS! They asked me....how are you doing this!!We almost have to force patients to walk!! They complain....it hurts....I can't do this!! My answer ....yes I hurt...but I make myself do it.....I want to get out of this hospital !!So...I keep going & I keep feeling stronger!! DO IT...IT'S ALL IN THE HEART & THE MIND! I was 63 then I'm 79 now!

How long were you on the wait list before they called you for your hip replacement surgery?

How long did you wait before they got you in for your first hip surgery?

I had X-rays in February. Couldn’t have consult with my surgeon of choice until May. Couldn’t have surgery until July! Then was given the option of having both hips done at once, but I didn’t want to do that, so having RHR on November 1.

Time, time. My recovery has been so incremental that it's frustrating at times, but I've got to keep my eyes on the prize and compare myself to where I was 4 months ago when I was released from the hospital after my right hip revision. Sometimes it even feels like PT is a setback, so I schedule PT appointments 3 weeks apart so I have some time to build strength and get used to new exercise routines.
Swelling has also been an issue, but with compression hose and time there really has been a difference. I'm just about to turn 61 and this has been my third (and final, my surgeon tells me) hip replacement/revision. I'll be happy to keep what I've got, even with limited mobility and some discomfort.

I agree. My PT was too aggressive and set me back a bit. I realize I am only 2+ weeks out of surgery, but I am disappointed that I cannot put full weight on my operated leg and still need to take Tylenol.
Can’t imagine going through numerous times. Hope this one is a charm.

Hi. I’m here for any encouragement offered. I had my RHR August 21 this year I am approximately eight weeks out. I guess I have a little pain when walking after I get up I’m not sleeping very well because I can’t toss and turn as I please. I still can’t sleep on my operated side. I’m going to start physical therapy next week, hopefully. Can anyone tell me when they started sleeping on their operated side and when the pain subsided? I’m hoping that the physical therapy will help me out some. I still can’t drive. Can people also, let me know when they could start driving again? I’m trying to stay uplifted, but it’s hard I’m young I’m only 55 and not being able to come and go as you please is very hard. I am not sure if I am rushing things or I’m behind. At any day, I feel it could go either way. thanks !
