I have a brain tumor but what is a PRIMARY brain tumor. I have 2 hemangiomas. Depending on what/whose medical literature you read it is of concern & must be watched and if it becomes too large or creates untoward s/s it will need to be removed. Other literature blows it off. Stating people usually still have the tumor 30yrs later when they die. Stating they hardly ever cause any problems.
I was told that a brain scan once a year is plenty enough for follow up.
Would I be appropriate for this group or would they all be seriously ill, in which case I would not feel comfortable.

From my understanding, a primary brain tumor is a tumor which began in the brain. Other types of tumors are metastatic - they are cancer which began elsewhere in the body and migrated to the secondary location, the brain.
You are welcome anywhere you feel comfortable in Mayo Clinic forums. I've never seen anyone excluded.
I hope your find the support and information that will help you.

Thanks. Guess I wasn't thinking cancer but you are correct in the fact that all divisions of medicine have a certain amount of their own terminology. And you described what Primary & Metastatic mean. Thanks for shaking this old brain up.

As I reread every thing again it is important to note that anywhere a cancer starts in one's body is called the Primary site. If it spreads, then those are referred to as the metastatic sites. So if the cancer starts in the Lung & then spreads to one's bones. It is said that they have Metastatic Lung Cancer. They may simply tell about the bones. I will shut up now.

Please note, anywhere ANY tumor begins it is a primary tumor. Not all primary tumors are cancerous. Other non -cancerous tumors are called "benign." And if a benign tumor forms somewhere, it is called a primary tumor because it's located in it's primary location of origin. Where any tumor originates, it is a primary tumor. The primary (first) appearance.
