Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

I have Medicare with Part D . I had to pay $1500 for the first month. $ 1000 for the second. After that $ 233 for the rest of the year. I’m planning to have to start over in December.

Just went through checking coverage for Evenity. Medicare part b covered some and my supplemental covers the rest. I was told that prescription drug plan doesn't cover any. I've also read that having the shots at infusion center makes a huge difference
That is evenity though...anyone want to weigh in on this

I use Sparkle Wellness with Fortibone called Osteo Boost Powder. You can buy it direct from them or on Amazon. I am using one scoop, which was supported in some studies.

leosteo, my Part D plan is with Blue Cross /Blue Shield. I have been taking Forteo for eight months. I’m very pleased how well it has been going.

barbjo, that's great. Have you looked at 2024 Blue Cross/Blue Shield Plan D yet? I live in the Northeast and there are only two BC/BS Medicare Plan D plans offered in 2024. (Blue Medicare Rx Premier (PDP/003) and Blue MedicareRx Value Plus (PDP/001). These two plans do not offer Forteo brand, only Teriparatide.

Which specific plan are you in? Just curious if the plans are different by region. Appreciate your insight.

barbjo, just fyi. Forteo is covered in the 2 Blue Cross Blue Shield plans I mentioned above in 2023. Looks like the medicare drug changes are causing several insurance carriers to drop brand name drugs. I have Aetna Silverscript. They too dropped Forteo (covered in 2023) for generic Teriparatide in 2024.

barbjo, update on my 2024 Part D plan research. AARP UHC 2024 Part D plan formulary covers Forteo, Teriparatide, and Tymlos. The costs vary. If your BC/BS plan doesn't cover Forteo in 2024, check out AARP UnitedHealthcare.

good to get this kind of feedback. I've also been taking the 5 types of collagen each am with my coffee...adding this into all the aleloritive changes I'm making. One has to do their own homework here..as there are a lot of these products out there..and some are pure hype. I've been doing the collagen for about 4 months now and I can see a difference in the skin on my hands..smoother. ...as well as the skin on my hands in general. Not looking for miracles here...just wanting to aid in what I'm lacking to be a better 'me' at 76 1/2....
Anyone else taking collagen now?....or whatever you're doing that you feel is important...please share. Thanks you.....hugs.....

Thank you for your interest bruceandruth1970. I just heard of the collagen peptides yesterday and today spent some time looking up the one that was recommended, Life Conscious bovine peptides one and two. I'm not sure which to purchase, or, for that matter, where. If you know about this I would appreciate any advice you might have.

Good Morning, Gravity3~
Hope this helps. I chose Codeage, unflavored..with all 5 types and with good ingredients. I get my supplements from Vitacost and wait until I see this product on sale. The 63-serving container lasts me for 2 months. I'm very satisfied with this product. I can see changes in my hair thickness, and nails that grow like talons..so fast...and my age spots are also fading. I see that I touted this product when I was 76...now..coming up to 79 in a week...so I've been taking this product for that whole time. Another member wrote about Life Conscious, which gets a very high rating as well. If you google these..you will find independent ratings for collagen products. I'm on a limited budget, so I have to go for the best for the least amount of money. Hope this helps you all. Go make it a great day for yourselves!

I take Horbaach Multi Collagen Protein Powder, which has five types of collagen. It's available on Amazon and has good reviews.
