Can PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) be induced by vaccine?

Posted by kristem2020 @kristem2020, Jan 2, 2021

Good evening, I’ve recently been diagnosed with PMR. It came on a week after my flu shot October 23, 2020.

Has anyone experienced the same diagnosis after a flu shot?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) Support Group.

I’m new to the group and will throw my 2-cents worth in here re: vaccines. I’ve always been a proponent of vaccines. I’m in that polio, smallpox, tetanus, era, and have never had any after effects of any of the vaccines except maybe a sore injection site; however, after my last flu shot at 71 (the senior one) my life has gone down hill. Started first with muscle weakness in my legs (kinda like ‘gumby’ legs), fatigue, head and neck aches and finally a full-blown stroke involving the left vertebral artery. I could go on but that all occurred in 2019. Was finally diagnosed with PMR in 2020 based on symptoms and my positive response to predisone; however I never had high CRP or sed rates—highest was 33 (sed) and 42 (CRP) and through all my blood tests hence my platelet count has been high. I could go on and on with three years of ups and downs, ins and outs of hospitals, countless blood tests, MRIs, CT scans, etc. I have had two flu shots are and the first two Covid shots, as well as one booster and again I have had subsequent hospitalizations for GCA, and diverticulitis. I too am done with the vaccines. I just want my body to try and recover on its own. It may or may not be vaccine related, but sure seems coincidental. Frustrated? You bet. I am a very active person… I love golf, hiking, exercise, and just plain living life but sometimes struggle with a lot of “why me?” feelings then kick myself in the butt and keep on going. Now am dealing with some sort of blood disorder that’s causing arterial blood clots, which is unusual because I’m not overweight, don’t smoke, don’t have high cholesterol, etc., so now I “get” to have a bone marrow biopsy in the near future to find out what the next plan will be. Aarrgghhh!!! I WILL OVERCOME THIS!! If you’ve read this so far, bless you, and thank you for your interest. I’m open to suggestions and comments but will still hold off on getting another vaccine.

I think it should be mandatory for every vaccine to list all of its ingredients. It may not be the active ingredient which causes the problem, it may be another ingredient causing the inflammatory reaction. Some vaccines use collagen as a stabiliser, a big problem for some of us, yet it is not mentioned. We need full disclosure on all the ingredients of every vaccine we take.

FYI vaccine ingredients can be found on CDC and FDA website. Also Google.

I'm so sorry to hear of your pain. Conversely, I only had pain while in bed and as soon as I got up, my pain went away! It took months to diagnose because my case was so mild, with no inflammatory markers in my blood. I happen to be a dietitian and eat a whole foods, primarily plant-based, organic diet, high in anti-inflammatory foods. I rarely eat or drink dairy and my meat intake is limited to about 2 - 3 oz. per day. I also take turmeric (with black pepper) and omega-3 supplements daily. Omega-3 fatty acids are very hard to find in the standard American diet of mostly processed food. Hope this helps you.

Turmeric and black pepper are high in oxalates which cause a reaction in some of us including an inflammatory reaction and joint aches. Many of the "superfoods" are high in oxalates and/or lectins which cause health problems for some people.

The full ingredients lists for vaccines (I'm in Australia) are not easy to find and Covid vaccine ingredients have only been made available more recently, but they're still not easy to find for all vaccines by googling. There are also variations in ingredients and amounts between the pharmaceutical companies.

There are no indications on any of the lists I've found to say which ingredients are most likely to cause an unintended reaction in some people. That requires another lengthy googlesearch for each and every ingredient mentioned.

Funny, but I have yet to hear that turmeric is a problem for anyone! I realize that oxalates might contribute to some forms of kidney stones, but I've had kidney stones many years ago (before I changed my diet to whole foods organic), and since then I've had no issues. If you happen to be following Dr. Gundry, I think he is misinformed and trying to sell his supplements more than provide evidenced-base research to the public. Dr. Gundry is very anti-lectin, but beans are the common demoninator in the Blue Zones, where people often live to be over 100 without chronic illness. If I were you, I would follow Dr. Michael Greger at https://nutritionfacts.org/

I think we've had this discussion before. I am definitely affected by high oxalate and high lectin foods, so you can chalk me up as the first person you've met who does have a problem with them. You have previously directed me to Michael Greger. His strictly vegan diet is not for me as a large part of my diet is meat, dairy and eggs - high protein, low carb, low oxalate/lectin.

Yes, I think we've had this conversation before. I wish you a lot of luck with your current diet. Unfortunately, meat, dairy and eggs are very low-nutrient density foods and devoid of fiber, which is one of THE most important macronutrients that most Americans lack in their diets. Your gut flora feeds on fiber and this is where most of your immunity takes place. And BTW, I am not a vegan because I do eat small amounts of animal protein, but I often reference his site because of the research behind his findings. Take good care of yourself.

Yes. October 2019. It was the senior version of the flu vaccine.

I'm not sure about the vaccines used in Australia, but here is a link to COVID vaccine info/ingredients for the CDC (US):https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/overview-COVID-19-vaccines.html

Thank you for that. It appears to have been updated and includes an example warning about a couple of ingredients, perhaps as a result of some adverse reactions. It would be more helpful if the ingredients list, along with warnings about possible adverse reactions to any of the ingredients, was provided at the time the vaccine was booked, in the same way that full ingredients lists for any supplement or medication are given before the product is consumed. The trouble is that most people don't know which chemicals they have an adverse reaction to till after they've had the reaction, and most people won't connect the reaction to a particular ingredient.
