Hi! I'm new to this group. My husband has stage 4 bladder cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The side effects have been significant. Probably the hardest is his lack of appetite. For the last 7 weeks or so he exists on 4 Ensures daily and water. I would appreciate suggestions about how to (gently..) encourage someone to drink their Ensure and lots of water. This feels like a constant battle. Thanks.

@maryelizabeth2. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. We have a great and helpful group of caregivers in this support group. I’m sure they will have lots of advice and tips for you. I’m with your husband—I get so tired of pain water, so I found the following list:
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) provides the following list of clear liquids:
Bouillon.
Clear, fat-free broth.
Clear carbonated beverages.
Consommé
Apple/cranberry/grape juice.
Fruit ices without fruit pieces.
Fruit ices without milk.
Fruit punch.
Also, if Ensure is a problem, try freezing it and making ice cream. Or buy some full fat ice cream!
Have you talked with the doctor and asked what your husband’s options are?

Hi,
I sure understand the constant battle over food and drink. My husband has lost over 20lbs dealing with lung cancer. Any suggestions of food or water is not received well. We did decide to have him keep track of his calories each day and he knows the goal. But nothing sounds good, or he's full. The high calorie Boost has been very helpful.
At the end of the day we have to know that we have done the best we can. Praying that things get better. Hugs!
