I was thought to have POEMS and was advised to start chemotherapy. Having had a year of chemo for colon cancer thirty years ago, I was hesitant to go through it again. I asked about a second opinion and was encouraged to see either Dr Dispenziares at Mayo or Dr van Rhees at the Myeloma Center in Little Rock. I was unable to be seen at Mayo but was able to be seen in Arkansas. After studies were completed, I was told that I did not have POEMS. I had MGUS with associated idiopathic neuropathy. All this to say that I did not consider chemotherapy as an option. I’m following up frequently and if my numbers change, I’ll reconsider, but very few progress from MGUS to MM.
