Air travel to see a Mayo Clinic physician?
I'm on the west coast and in 2018 was diagnosed, by a neurologist, with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. The condition has greatly impacted most aspects of my life and this year I began seeing a clinical psychotherapist to help me with depression. She recommends that I make plans to visit a Mayo Clinic location, maybe in Minnesota, to see a professional there. I'm wondering if anyone here has thoughts, they'd be willing to share regarding the practicality of a traveling medical visit because I'm unsure if it makes sense to see a Mayo Clinic physician who lives a plane flight away. Are there do's and don'ts that should be considered? and could they be shared here?

@bryanbay - Wanted to mention that some of the motels have shuttle service from their front door to the front door at Mayo Rochester. If you go in winter, unground tunnels from one building to another. The place is unbelievable. When done tests, same shuttle will return you to the motel. Check out places that provide the free shuttle. Hope you hear good news soon.
@bryanbay Yes, neurology is at the main Mayo campus. There is a building with white marble on the outside which is the Mayo building, and joined to that is the Gonda building that has the curved glass exterior. These are joined inside on the floors so you can walk between them. When I saw a neurologist from the spine center, I think it may have been in the Mayo building and had neurological testing somewhere in the Gonda building. My spine surgeon saw me in the Gonda building. The hotel shuttles pull up on one side and across from that is a small park with statues of the Mayo brothers and their father, the first Mayo and the sister who’s efforts started St Mary’s hospital which is several blocks away. If you are driving to an appointment, there is a parking structure called the Damon Ramp across from the shuttle drop off area on 3rd . That is a one way street and you need to be in the left lane to enter the parking ramp. If that ramp is filled, there is another in the next block also on the left. Parking can fill up, so it is best to get there in the morning. The Damon ramp has underground access to the Gonda building underground on the “Subway level”.
I have visited Mayo Clinic Rochester and UnMN Medical Twin Cities. Both said the same thing. Do not know the cause and really no cure. I stopped gabapentin after too many side affects and now use Cannibas CBD:THC 1:3 Relief Body Oil. My grandchildren obtain it for me in CA.
Good to know in case I get an appt there.
I went in January and February because it was easier to get an appointment then. I highly recommend the Mayo. I saw neurologist and numerous other specialist to diagnose or rule out a very rare, none treatable brain condition. I also had a brain tumor. I spent a week the first time and went back to St. Mary's hospital for a Gamma knife procedure. I was there for a week. After I came home my neurologist kept in contact with me and looked at all if my tests done in my home town.
Unfortunately I had a stroke when I came home (not their fault) and had to have emergency surgery.
I could have gone back there but was unable to travel. Everything about the Mayo was amazing. The doctors, volunteers, restaurants, shops, beautiful artwork and baby grand pianos that were very comforting. I was told once you are a patient always a patient.
I am having some complicated blood issues that my doctors are unable to diagnose. I am thinking of going back for that. I wish you the best no matter what you decide.
How long do you have to wait for an appointment?
I called Mayo in AZ a couple of weeks ago for an appointment regarding my scoliosis (for which I’ve had multiple surgeries over the years). I was told at that time they were short one doctor and couldn’t see me. I was told to try again at the beginning of next year! Needless to say, I was very disappointed.
Thank you for sharing. Its encouraging to know that the experience will be first rate.
My experience with getting appointments is that they were about 4 months out. Not that different from where I live.
For me it wasn't very long because I chose to go in January and February. I think it was about a month. I was told that because the temperatures are so cold alot people don't want to go then.
Yes the temperatures were very cold with snow but our hotel was attached to the clinic, stores and restaurants so there was a constant temperature in the 70s and I had no need to go out except when I went to St. Mary's hospital which was one mile away. Took an Uber because of the temperatures.
