Does wearing a catheter usually mean higher blood sugar?

@tempa welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I see you have posted 2 discussions regarding catheters. The other discussion pertains to catheters and X-rays. I have little experience or knowledge about that. This discussion is about a possible relation between catheter use and elevated blood sugar. I focus mainly on the Diabetes & Endocrinology Group. Have too much experience related to blood sugar. I’m not aware of any direct relationship between catheter use and blood sugar. That being said all of our body parts and systems are related (head to toe, inside and out). Each thing can potentially affect everything else. To better understand your situation, if you don’t mind sharing why have you been catheterized and why are you monitoring your blood sugar?

My husband just has started with a catheter, due to bad bladder and kidney disease. He also has diabetes and COPD. His BP has been low all week. The kidney Dr and the endocrinologist are managing the meds, but lisinopril seems to keep BP low and then it goes high when they take him off of it. However, hubby is pretty complex in his needs and issues and somewhat unsymptomatic as a normal person is.

Who knows about suprapubic catheters (foley type) for men?
They will soon remove the nice pigtail one to replace it with a foley type.
It will not go to a bag, just a valve with an on/off lever. The urologist had never heard of them, so i can't ask him.
Is the tube easy to shorten? where should it lay, on the leg etc. all tips appreciated!!

Check out the prostate cancer group on connect. Lots of catheters there. I have suprapubic and no change in BP or blood sugar.

does yours go to a bag or a valve?

I have day leg bag and a night time bag on a long tube. I change leg bag every 2 weeks and night bag monthly.

thanks. an alternative is a valve and no bags. depending on your situation it moght be worth looking into
