New to living with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

Posted by Janie @dougjanehaltom, Nov 20, 2020

I have recently been diagnosed with MCI and I'll be attending Mayo Clinic group on this. Each day just seems to bring me challenges. I have days when I get depressed because I feel like I'm being a burden to others. I will be attending MCI seminar at Mayo Clinic in January. I need help and support in this area.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Brain & Nervous System Support Group.

Re-floating the OP idea of mild MCI support. It seems that's DSM-IV era as I'm learning.

If we had a support group, would it be mild NCD, which MCI is a subset? From https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6519631/, reference "McDonald WM. Overview of Neurocognitive Disorders. Focus (Am Psychiatr Publ). 2017 Jan;15(1):4-12. doi: 10.1176/appi.focus.20160030. Epub 2017 Jan 11. PMID: 31975834; PMCID: PMC6519631".

Essestially, it states MCI was aimed at the older population, and NCD is across age groups, and includes MCI. I was diagnosed in August with multiple reasons for NCD (sepsis, NDE, stroke, transplant, 3x M.I.s, PTSD, all in the last 3 years). No mention of MCI, even though I am a 67M. Under DSM-IV, I believe my diagnosis would have said MCI. But not under the current DSM-V.

Other NCD support groups, whether in Mayo Connect or elsewhere, seem to focus on caregivers with major NCD people to care for. These support groups make me cringe for obvious reasons. I avoid them, knowing I could potentially, without forethought of thought on my part, drag my loved ones through hell that is laid out in every post. I'm now on a guilt trip with this of where I could go with NCD, and I don't need it made worse by reading how somebody's Dad is mis-behaving again under Alzheimer's, making their life miserable. A lot of unhappy people there. We, those with minor NCD and don't need caregiver's attention yet, thankfully and not yet wandering into major NCD, seem to fall in a social support crack. I have a ton of questions, and no place to land, share, and help with like people. Maybe something is out there and I just missed it. Fortunately, I have an excuse (pun intended).

A support group for us sounds really good to help us muddle through this while we can.

I have had mild to moderate MCI for years since I am an insomniac. If I take a sleeping pill before my annual test, I ace it, so that is a huge factor‼️food is next, 2 HUGe components…pills & medications are also messing with our bodies & our immune system’s ability to clean itself up…gratefully, Marianne

Was diagnosed with MCI about a month ago. Am 61 and, while some of it makes better sense now (the increased anxiety, forgetting/losing things, inability to multi-task, slow to get big projects done). Honestly, I'm scared as hell. Wife has been great (her Dad died of Alzheimer's). My Mom (85) just confirmed with Dementia. I'm going through periods of anger, frustration, depression, sadness, fear, etc. I know that there's not a magic answer, however....

Don’t fear or be frustrated with what god has sent you…we are all humans on planet earth & at this age we will ‘have’ or ‘get’ something…no one is perfect. Far from it…embrace it all. Joyfully, Marianne

Like any health issue, basic healthy lifestyle helps:
eating well I eat each day simple and whole foods generally making sure the healthy plate that is recommended by health departments of most universities and I suppose Mayo Clinic too,

physical activity; Was not feeling in good spirits yesterday so did 'air kicking a football with each leg with Full Force so that your Other foot gets a little up in the air (One can do it as in my 80 y.o. frame. Today I said maybe brisk walking for two half hours will bring my energy level back. Will see tmorrow!

Keeping mind do some cognitively challenging work. There's going to be a book club discussing Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid, 2019 book in a few days. I want specifically how to Find Friends. All what I've read, loneliness already kills 50% more who are deprived of socially engaged experiences where we can discuss intelligently/critically our issues whether of health, education, in a relaxed and challenging but Supportive environment,...

I rarely have problem w/ sleep. So far free of any meds, tests, surgeries etc and rarely doc visits.
I'd love to know how people have found friends especially new ones in new places. I have been try hrad for years but no success yet.

Anyone plays 'wordle'game in the Times? It's a quick interesting logic and vocabulary testing game. Cheers friends from Toronto/Canada.

Hi Sisyphus!
You are such a Canuck! Good for you for trying to keep healthy. There are certainly likeminded people in To. It is a big city with lots of possibilities. Join clubs to be with people who have the same interests....even a progressive minded church. Toronto has everything.
Yes, I do Wordle daily as well : it doesn’t take long and is fun!
Keep walking, BTW there are walking groups in every town as well .......
Happy Sunday!

@sisyphus I am 86.. I play "Wordle" and the new game "Connections" each day from the NYTIMES.. today Wordle solved in 3.. It is fun to share solving the games with others.. but like any interaction you have to "give and take"... I live alone.. in my own house.. as a male, I have to cultivate friends as friends die.. but email groups.. I do not do Facebook for Political reasons.. they don't watch disinformation well enough.. but share success and mistakes with others is important .. today I was able to do all Connections categories.. that takes an active mind to wander through experiences to see Similarities... Connections.

Fact: single women & married men live longest…single women are more social & find friends easier than single men. Married men of course expect their wives will keep them company so…don’t be a single man…just kidding!! It’s all good, loneliness is a state of mind. We are gifted with so much in 2023, why be lonely, angry, tired, bored?? Let’s aim to be less spoiled! Gratefully, M

Good to know a Wordler!

Yes Deity...Stair...RIGHT. I always do it by the midnight as a treat, with a beer sometimes. But I don't take all the credit especially for "impressive" tho I don't mind basking a few seconds by a stranger's evaluation.

I 'hate' combinations cuz it's squatting the place where simple math quiz used to be,,,in six tries to solve with +, -, x and divide to get 'Genius' Another overkill as long as one knows! Now we have what requires to be familiar with American taste, not universal. Sent my vote to NYT. No luck yet...most are happy with it it seems!
I read mostly health and mental health, education, science. What amazes me the thrust of most comments is politicized as in the WSJ, in the opposite direction. No wonder polarization is having a day. Let's hope the democracy stays strong; the world needs it.

I'd love to exchange some opinion pieces in a friendly and open but curious state of mind. If you have friends to discuss you are Lucky. I'm trying everyday -- even some newer ways.

I think I posted suggestions on this string months ago. My main one is that you don't have any cognition to lose, so don't waste any. On clutter in the house or at work (if you're still working), on alcohol, on over-stimulation, on stress. The last is hard, but focus on sensory processing, not merely conceptual processing. Give your right brain a workout, esp if your left brain is balky. Go rest and relax, not fight or flee (parasympathetic, not sympathetic nervous system)--tho ultimately you need both to work together, just with the parasympathetic in the lead.

You know by now that MCI describes cognition that fits somewhere, anywhere, between dementia and that which is appropriate for your (advanced) age. When I first got the label 2 or 3 yrs ago--I forget when!--I thought it was another neuro euphemism, like "borderline" without specifying that I was on the border between average and inferior, not average and superior. But I now realize that the failure to specify degrees of cognitive impairment from mild to moderate to severe is due to the inability to measure cognition more precisely. So there's often room for some patient optimism when it comes to MCI, which, as I hope you know, does not invariably progress to dementia.

And as implied in the preceding paragraph, try to keep a sense of humor thru the process. It helps me re-energize after an incident of inattentiveness or failed memory.

Peace.

Very wise and helpful. Thank you. And you have answered one of my frequent self-questions....how do I know how severe my cognitive impairment is right now?
