Gabapentin side effects?

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Apr 13, 2019

I am a regular on the Mayo Board! I don't know what I would do without it! Our doctors don't want to discuss openly the things about illnesses and side effets of drugs and other things. Anyway, my question to all of you is Gabapentin and it's side effects. I have been on it now for 6 months. My doctor raised me from 100mg. to now I am on 400mg. three times a day.
The problem is my tiredness! I happen to be in a friends office yesterday and she was taking some medicine. She said she was taking Gabapentin. I asked why and she said she had, had shingles back when and it still helped with the pain. I know the drug is percribed for many things that is why I take it for my issues.
I told her I had been taking it for about 6 months. She asked if I had been tired all the time, just out of the Blue. OF COURSE I SAID YES! She said it took her a year before she got out of the tiredness.
Let me know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also let me know at what dosage you may be on? I know this is all confidential!
Again Thanks to The Mayo Clinic and Everyone who is kind enough to be open with their lives!
Sundance!

I was taking Gabapentin for Fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I switched to Lyrica because the Gabapentin did nothing for the Fibromyalgia pain. I was tired all the time, could not drive, and felt like my brain just wasn't working at full capacity. Made a lot of mistakes when on Gabapentin. My husband takes it for neuropathy and it affects his cognitive function. Thank you for sharing.

My current dosage of Gabapentin is 300mg twice a day. While I was in the hospital, my doctor kept upping my dosage. I too am experiencing fatigue, yet I have trouble sleeping. I’m taking this drug for the neuropathy in my feet. The neuropathy is a result of a very bad bought with Covid-19. It nearly killed me.
I am a 59 year old female and an ovarian cancer survivor.
I would love to learn if there is another way to deal with this neuropathy. I can walk, but I’m unsteady on my feet at times.

I take 600mg plus 5mg Diazepam three times daily for Pudendal neuralgia. It helps somewhat, but yes, it affects my brain. I’m still having a lot of pain and am thinking about switching to Lyrica. Hopefully more pain relieve. I took Lyrica after back surgery about 10 years ago and it definitely helped, but stopped due to side effects.

Before I started taking it I would be up all night with leg and foot neuropathy. I couldn’t take pain; now I can sleep. Sleep healing is more important than other side effects.

I’m wondering about your comment “ or lose your teeth”. Do you mean a side effect of the drug or of the pain?. I ask because my teeth are breaking all the time.

I read if you don’t take gabapentin three times a day your teeth start rotting from the gums. That’s all I know it’s worth looking into. It is a calcium blocker which my gout got really big in my foot. I have to have surgery eventually trying to get over the PHN pain from shingles. I got four years ago. Just be careful on gabapentin and Lyrica. I got off my pain actually got less it creates pain I believe so you’ll keep taking the pill.

Since on Gabapentin my teeth have changed. Darker color, stains in a few places. Went to the dentist, who was very surprised to see my teeth. Asked me if I started a new medication. Gabapentin is the only one. Even white strips don’t work any more.

Gabapentin does make you tired when I first got shingles. I was on 2400 mg a day I was like a zombie finally went down to 900 a day still tired like in the zone. All the time finally went off of them after three years I did try do you, Lyrica I think it was good for the pain but you were more sedated on Lyrica and gabapentin. Be careful with it.

I switched from Gabapentin to Lyrica but had much worse brain fog. Ended up switching back to Gabapentin.
