Prescription of Zifaxan for abdominal pain/possible infection
I have had long Covid off and on for a year. In the past few months I have developed abdominal pain and bloating, and my bowel movements have changed to a consistently different type. I have hard time eating anything other than spicy proteins, fats and whole grains. I have also gained weight.
CAT scans and stool tests show nothing amiss and my GI doctor suspects an infection which was allowed to developed due to my weakened GI immune system. She has prescribed Zifaxan, which I am starting.
Has anyone else encountered these symptoms and/or ben prescribed Zifaxan?

Thanks so much for that. Super helpful. I will use FODMAP to adjust my diet, particularly gluten and dairy. Jim
YES! I had developed SIBO shortly after having Covid. Two weeks to be exact. I was on Xifaxan for a month. It helped the bacteria go away but I still had abdominal pain and abdominal bloating. My bowel movements ranged from brown to light brown regardless of what I ate. I chronically have right sided pain but all my scans looked normal. I have had THREE abd MRIS's. Its just all too crazy how my athletic self declined so much since having the virus.
you might try Amla (indian gooseberry) for your gut. it is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine.
I was prescribed Xifaxan for issues not COVID related. It’s very expensive, but I found it at a Canadian pharmacy site for a tenth of the price.
Thanks. I will check it out.
Even the copay is indeed incredibly expensive. Thanks for the heads up on Canada.
