Can any substance be put in between bones to keep from rubbing togethe

Severe pain inside inner thigh. Doc said arthritis in hip. Don’t want surgery. Is there anything that can be added in between bones to prevent from rubbing together?

Hey juju01, in answer to your question about medications that can be administered into a joint to ease the pain of OA and increase mobility, you'll want to talk to your doctor or surgeon about Hyaluronic Acid. It's extracted from the combs of roosters and is injected directly into the afflicted joint. It reduces the pain by reducing the inflammation, and binds to the joint surface. This smooths the surface and allows better movement. But remember, this is not a permanent solution. Some people get very minimal benefit, but most get good results that last about a year. Some choose to go with annual injections and completely forego surgery. My neighbour and I have both had Synvisc in our knees, he annually for several years, me twice.

Oooh, Leannestork, you better talk to your doctor or an anesthesiologist about your conditions. I know zilch about fibromyalgia and lupus. My best guess is your low pain resistance is the reason why they have these procedures done with a general anesthetic rather than local. You definitely wouldn't be able to handle the freezing agent used for nerve blockers and rhyzotomies. They're acid-based and are VERY uncomfortable for about 10 seconds, but for you, probably longer.

I have been told that my shoulder joints are like rachets ! Bone against bone. Also, orthopedic surgeon says the only thing that I can do is have shoulder replaced. Has anyone had anything injected in the shoulder joint ? I cannot tolerate steroids.
Thank you

Thank you for sharing. I have intense pain and no more cartilage in my shoulders.
Can this substance be applied to the shoulder joints too?

Yes …my husband gets in synvisc to his one shoulder. It doesn’t do a heck of a lot …he’s older then me by ten years and has very bad shoulders and arthritis everywhere. I have severe pain right shoulder 4 years now with pains shooting down my arm and shoulder girdle like near my chest it aches badly..I hear ya!sleeping is a nightmare with it. After doing a lot of lifting with my nursing career caring for my mother when sick, it took a massive toll on my petite frame. When my shoulder acts up other things act up as well toes lots of things face of my finger my thumb which is a typical area for osteoarthritis by the way so my rheumatologist is trying to rule out inflammatory arthritis but it’s not clear findings. I only want peace in my life my shoulder is terrible it affects the neck too, it’s awful! When you have pain other areas are affected.. all connected. My husband did get Synvisc he got it 2 years ago. Synvisc was new to our drs practice..he’s excellent. So it might work better for other people..no one’s the same as my sister a physician says. She’s right. I refuse desk I did not do well with my knee that needs replacement so I would never have it in my own shoulder, and I’m not getting any more cortisone shots in my right shoulder as it thins out the tendons and cartilage.
I had a few shots in my day and but no more as it’s not worth it and only helped maybe twice briefly. My passed away in 2018 and that’s when everything got bad…my grief is never ending .. the mind and body connection. My sister is a doctor she told me that I lost a lot of muscle from not using my body. The arthritis came on acutely 2 years after. I mean I had some arthritis..not bad but not like now and losing muscle and upper body fat too doesn’t help. It’s very hard to even do PT when you’re in such pain but I must get more muscle even if in pain. I can’t imagine anyone working under these conditions thank goodness I’ve retired I had to after my son‘s death I’m just not the same I have intense pain too you’re not alone take care my best to you. PS you should find a good Dr. whose very familiar with shoulder Synvisc injections.

Hi @marian, the pain of heartbreaking sorrow over the loss you have suffered with your son -- my heart and soul goes out to you with hope that you can somehow find him through the mysteries of love and life that have helped to sustain our fellow souls. To try to do more than endure can be task so overwhelming, and I will try, in spite of this, to mention some ways in which my own situation may be of interest. I am 82 and have been urgently advised to Evenity for bone loss. The severe pain in my shoulders has been recommending replacement surgery but my husband is quite disabled and needs help in ways I could not do for an extended period if I did that. I also smoked heavily for 30 years and quit 30 years ago. These things factor in to my pain sources. Also, I had a hip replacement sixteen years ago and I am trying to preserve that to avoid a hip revision, which is another thing that could prevent me from care of my husband. I do a lot of water exercises and use the hot tub very often too. The water helps to be mobile with less stress on our bones; the hot tub heals, or if it doesn't heal it helps to alleviate pain at the very least. My frame is petit too, so, like you, more prone to loss and less able, inherently, to tolerate heavy lifting and other ways in which caregiving can tax our muscles, our joints, and other areas. Thank you for your advice, generously given in spite of your suffering. I deeply appreciate your words, your generosity.
