Legs swelling on and off all day

Posted by twinnotes @teinnotes, Aug 31, 2023

My legs have started swelling on and off during the day. When I wake in the mornings no swelling at all. Then it starts again. It seems to be the lower part of my leg. Not ankles or feet.
Any idea what this could be?

A few days ago, my ankles swelled up and it made walking difficult and somewhat painful. A friend said it means I have heart problems. So, I went to a heart specialist/Internist who did an EKG and said my heart was fine. He didn't know why it was happening, but he prescribed a pill that makes spend lots of time in the bathroom. He also wants me to get ultra sound of my legs and a blood test. Return to get an electrocardiogram which I thought was the EKG he did in his office. Guess not! I now wear compression socks which seems to help with my walking. I googled my problem and it wasn't good. It said it could be for a life time. OMG. It also said to cut out salt and coffee. Yikes. I will try to get all these things done asap, but my purse is small. Need to know what's happening to me.

Keep me informed. I have tried to learn to stay off Google when it comes to my health. Nothing good comes out of it. 🙏

Did your ankles return to normal?

When you are resting put your legs up, higher than your heart. Compression stockings with medium strength are easy to find. Best of luck to you and hope you will be doing better soon.

No, still swollen. But, today I wore tight compression socks and had a hard time getting them off my swollen feet. They were not as swollen afterwards. Waiting to see what happens next.

Well, yes, kind of. They aren't so swollen as a few days ago, but they are not normal at this time. I still take Lasik each morning and must stay home until at least noon. They still are burning however.

Has neuropathy been considered? I'm not sure if you have "electricity" or tingling in your legs. Have you tried elevating your legs above your heart?

Yes, I do have some tingling. I have tried elevating them above my heart. May work for alittle. It’s crazy how they do. One minute that can be swollen and an hour later they go down. This is on and off all day. In the mornings when I wake, they aren’t swollen…..then it’s starts up again. On and off.

Hello @poochmom and welcome to Mayo Connect. It sounds like you have some experience with neuropathy. Have you found that elevating your feet has helped with symptom control?

How long ago were you diagnosed with this disorder? Do you have any other helpful tips to share?

I haven’t been diagnosed yet. I needed a pcp so I have sent new patient paperwork in. My main concern was the on and off swelling of my calves. At times they look normal. At times they swell. They look normal when I wake up in the mornings. A friend of mine said it might be atrial fibrillation. I do have a fast heartbeat at times and give out of breath some.
