How do I get low dose naltrexone through Mayo Clinic Pharmacy?

Posted by annewoodmayo @annewoodmayo, Sep 3, 2023

My rheumatologist has agreed to prescribe LDN, but she doesn't have a compounding pharmacy to recommend.

How do I go about getting it from Mayo?
Is there a phone number?
Do they ship it?
How much does it cost?

All answers are very welcome!
Thanks, everyone! and good luck with your health issue!

Hi @annewoodmayo, I think you would need to talk to the Mayo Clinic Pharmacy but you probably have to be a Mayo Clinic Patient unless your rheumatologist is able to do the ordering. Here's the page with the contact information for Rochester Mayo – https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/resources/pharmacy-services.

The page has a link to the mail service pharmacy information also – https://refill.mayoclinic.org/mail-service.

Are you a Mayo Clinic patient?

@annewoodmayo I honestly don’t know the answers to your question so I’ve asked the other mentors if they know. Are there no other compounding pharmacies in your area? Have tried calling some local pharmacies to ask if they know of a compounding pharmacy? Maybe if we wait, a member will have a name of a pharmacy for you.

Hi Becky,

I did call around and got the name of one place. Since it has to be compounded and most compounding pharmacies ship -- I think-- it doesn't seem to matter where you are located.

My doc is very hesitant. She doesn't have any other patients on LDN. I thought she would feel better if we got it from Mayo Clinic. I would feel better about it, too, if it came from Mayo.

Thanks VERY much for your speedy reply!!

If it eases your mind, many compounding pharmacies are now set up to handle low dose naltrexone as its use is becoming more common. And it is stable at room temperature, so shipping should not be an issue. We just went through this exercise to find a compounding pharmacy for LDN for my husband when we are at our winter home.

Good morning..I have it..here is the info on the bottle..you have to get it from the specialty pharmacy as this drug has to be be specially made..labeling is 90 naltrexone HCL 1.5 mg oral capsule..phone number 507-284-4041. address on the bottle is Mayo Clinic Pharmacy 3551 Commercial Drive SW Rochester Mn. 55902...you have to have the doctor order it..you have to pre pay by credit or debit card and then they mail the RX to you at your home...you are not able to pick up the medicine. but it is a easy process and not that expensive. my insurance would not pay for it. The directions are to take one capsule ( 1.5 mg total) at bedtime. Hope this information helps you. Let me know how it works for you. Sincerely, kitty2

My doctor uses a compounding pharmacy in Colorado for my prescription to LDN. It's Belmar Pharmacy, 800-525-9473.
I take one 4 mg tablet at bedtime. But I started with 1 mg tablet and increased to 4 mg since I wasn't experiencing any side effects. My doctor prescribed for me due to my having Hashimoto's and testing showing antibodies are attacking my thyroid. This is an off label use for LDN in my case.
And as stated by kitty2, the LDN is mailed to you providing you prepay. I am not a Mayo Clinic patient and I live in CA.
Best to you.

I'm glad that people are starting to discover this drug and giving it the respect it deserves. Side effects are rare but they do happen. I've been on mine sice 2019 and I had to really talk my new rheumatologist into it. "I've practiced medicine 31 years and never found the need for it"' she said. Well, I countered with "It might not help everyone but it helps me!" She gave in.

HI everyone!

First, thank you all for your kind and helpful replies! I wish there were a way to be sure that all of you see this thank you note. 🙂

I have called 3 compounding pharmacies. I'm going to message my doc with the info, and let her make the final choice. I've got a serious case of "decision fatigue" ! I think my doc will feel better knowing that Mayo Clinic's specialty pharmacy is dispensing LDN routinely. My doc was super helpful with my social security disability process. I try to remember to do any little thing I can to make things easier for her. Kinda funny since there ain't much, as you all know.

I'm hoping that you-all will bug me for an update so that I get the message to my doc written and sent! I need an accountability partner- haha. I also have a bad case of "task avoidance" right now. Everything just seems so hard to get done right now...Sorry for the whine.

Thanks, again!!
