What are your tips for staying independent at your own home?
Many people say they’d prefer to grow old in their own homes. What are your tips for remaining independent as long as possible. What do you do to:
- Keep up with home maintenance and housekeeping?
- Avoid injuries around the house?
- Combat loneliness or stay connected?
Any other tips?

Thanks Ginger. Many different names are used, based on their configuration/brand/function..hence why I didn’t use any particular nomenclature besides a description 🙂
I’ve formerly prescribed all sorts, but mostly the Invocare hoist, found here https://www.pushmobility.com.au/products/invacare-birdie-compact?variant=31726998454352¤cy=AUD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwbK3zdWPgQMVTg-DAx3rPQYTEAQYAyABEgLpf_D_BwE which I’ve found to be quite versatile (but not the only one I’ve prescribed from Invacare).
The other item I find helpful is the half step block, for those with staircases: https://stairaide.com/stairaide-blocks/
Many thanks Ginger - I did not know this. Robin
Hi these are all very good suggestions which I will look into. Many thanks. RobinAnn
The Fire Dept. in NYC, I'm told, has a service that just goes out to get people up off the fround. Maybe your area has such a service...good luck !
Very helpful, especially the baskets for sliding stuff in and out of cabinets! As an apartment dweller, some of your other helpful ideas don't apply.
When I feel despondent, I hope I connect with you through the chat function. Is it accessible via a website? Now, I phone and deal with whoever answers but am more comfortable writing.
I visited a couple of facilities that advertised all the wonderful experiences you could have if you lived there. What an eye opener. They are all owned by corporations whose bottom line is money - not service. I found the actual accommodations very small. Right now I am in my own home. At the end of this month I will be 89 years old, but after visiting those places I plan on staying in my home by sheer grit.
I’m somewhat in your boat. Friends disbanded around Covid while I was having heart bypass and now surgery for bone infection in lumbar area. I can still drive but don’t feel comfortable trying to go alone to places I would normally drive to. Feel very compromised. Family is suggesting retirement community so there would be people around.
There is an online program called Nymbl that is free (where I am) that may be able to improve balance. It might be worth a look
You sound fantastic!
@notmoff- Hello. Connect is a 24 hr online chat group. All of us are patients who help other patients.
You are more than welcome to post here anytime you want. You will see lots of rants and raves, too! Post your heart out; we are all lovely ( lol ) and know what it's like to be "handicapped" in some way.
And this is the website: I believe that you are on it!
