Something in my neck is popping out of place
Hello all,
Over the past, i’d say 4 years i’ve had a very odd thing happen in my neck and it happens when I swallow or move my neck (no specific way). It doesn’t happen often, it could be 3 times a week or once in 3 months. Basically there is something that feels like a tube popping out of place and i have to use my hand to push it back in place. It’s like something is bending. It sounds really odd but it’s really really painful and when it happens a panic feels my body and i have to push it back in right away. It happens just under my left jaw and a bit over from my adam’s apple, sort of where you would check your pulse. I can’t find anything on the internet about this and haven’t decided to go to the doctor because it’s something that happens randomly.
If anyone knows anything on this, that would be great!!

Can the upper part of the larnyx pop out of place? It feels like that may be what's popping out?
This is an incredible thread!I have never found a clearer description of what has been happening to me off and on for 25 years. I've been to several doctors and no one has been able to tell me what is wrong. I was in the ER last night because my throat popped (during a yawn while talking--which I try never to do because I know it can trigger this) and I was in terrible pain. I couldn't talk or swallow but had to gently spit into a kleenex. I tried an ice pack and heating pad but it wasn't resolving so I went to the ER. They did a CT scan of my neck (normal) and gave me some IV meds (pain killer and ativan). Within an hour the pain had dissipated and I was able to swallow again. I still don't know what caused it and am scheduling with an ENT. It really feels to me like some cartilage in the throat or larynx pops out of place. Neck, throat, and face are really sore today.
Wow -- this is exactly what happens to me. Mine feels like cartilage that's shifted, and it creates a sensation almost like having a chicken bone or butter knife lodged in my throat. It started happening when I was an adolescent (the first time terrified me), and it's so sporadic. I've never been able to figure out the movement that triggers it. It doesn't create as much panic for me now, since I've become comfortable with (immediately) popping it back into place.
So nice to know I have comrades for this bodily mystery! I've asked random people about it over the years and never found anyone else who has it.
That feels like exactly what happens to me! I went to an ENT at Mass General Hospital last week and they had no idea what was happening, which was disappointing. They advised avoiding my triggers which for me is yawning while talking or with my head turned to the side. This has happened to me once or twice a year since adolescence even though I of course try very hard to avoid the triggers.
Incidentally, I have only managed to "pop it back into place" once (quite accidentally). Good for you for being brave enough to push it back in. I hope I can get comfortable with that as well.
I have this also
The pain is horrific
Cant swallow or speak
My first incident happened 25 years ago .
Now it's a few times a year .I try to be careful how I move my neck to prevent it . I have to gently feel around with my fingers to try to move tiny bone back in place . The pain goes all the way up into my ear and it is scary and horrible .
I have had the exact same problem for years on the right side of my neck. I don’t know if any of you have also experienced this, but I’ll also get a deep throbbing pain in the same place, but on the left side, that stays for about a week each time. I’ve had several ultrasounds that haven’t found anything abnormal, but I have another ENT appointment this week.
I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and, interestingly, I know of two other people with EDS that have the same throat issue. The only medical condition that I’ve been able to find that might fit the symptoms is Clicking Larynx Syndrome. It occurs when the cartilage on the sides of the thyroid is too big and it interferes with the movement of the hyoid bone, causing pain and a clicking sound. There are several medical articles that discuss recent cases that you can find on Google.
I will let you know if I find out anything at my next appointment!

It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one with this problem, but frustrating to find out that it’s still such a mystery. I’ve had this issue for over 25 years and it’s getting harder to push whatever it is that’s out of place back into place. Today was the worst it’s ever been. Hopefully, someone will figure this out!
How do you push it back in. I’ve been in such bad pain for 2 hours now. I’ve had this for years and never knew u could push it back in. I would just wait till I felt it pop back and all pain was gone
Both me and my twin sister have had this issue since we were kids. It only happens a couple times a year since we try our best to avoid the triggers. Our trigger is typically yawning and moving our neck or yawning with our neck in any bent or turned position. I am assuming this isnt a disease or anything that a doctor will be able to diagnose. I am convinced it is just cartilage/ligaments in the neck moving and popping out of place. Maybe its because we all have slightly different anatomy in the ligaments that allow this movement. Both me and my sister have a different technique to fix it so i think you just have to see what works for you. I used to be able to chug water and push a little lower than where you take ur pulse. That stopped working for me and now I have to open my mouth wide and bend my neck to the side and push it back in place. My twin sister basically does a low moan noise and it pops back into place for her. I also notice that once it happens to me, I am more prone to getting it in the near future. Like i went 2 years without getting it and then had it happen twice in a week. Maybe it causes some inflammation and then its more likely to pop out of its positon
