Intestinal Metaplasia: What do you do to lower the risk of cancer?
Has anyone been diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia? What does your doctor recommend? I was just diagnosed and am very anxious about it because of the risk of cancer. Would like to hear your experience with it. Thank you.

I have the same as you, early 50’s , IM, acid reflux, ulcers, but taking 40g of pentaprozole and I had a second endo and doctor said looks much better. I do have to stay on the pentaprozole. I’m feeling good. I just try to eat healthy nothing fried, no red meat, wash products very well. I don’t think IM is reversible but I do think you can control it by eating healthy.
Cut all salt out of diet. No booze, soda, smoking of any type. Eat a gerd diet, low acid, low fat to prevent gerd. No Ibuprofen only tylenol. Don't eat before bed.
Hi - Unfortunately, our 19 year old got diagnosed with IM recently. Do you mind passing on the name and contact of the doctor that specializes in IM please? Thx
Hope you are doing well!
Hi @txmankc, as a mom, I'm sure you are worried sick about this diagnosis for your son.
Mayo Clinic specializes in GI neoplasia. You may wish to read more here:
- Gastrointestinal Neoplasia Clinic https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/gastrointestinal-neoplasia-clinic/overview/ovc-20357679
To inquire if Mayo Clinic might be an option for your son, you can speak with a coordinator http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
How is he doing?
He inly mentioned avoiding picklrs because they're too salty Yhe GI said.
Does low acid mean no apple cider vinegar with water on an empty stomach? No coffee?
NO Apple cider vinegar period! You can try healthwise low acid coffee which I drink with unsweetened almond milk as a creamer. Almond milk is alkaline.
Intestinal Metaplasia? Isn't that basically Barrett's Metaplasia, only south of the duodenum? It's the same pipeline, where the esophageal lining starts resembling (and shouldn't) the bowel.
Wonder if there are any known irritants to avoid? North of the stomach it's acid, but south, digestive juices are necessary. There's an inverse relationship there, so any advances in treating one side should be a clue-in for treating the other, one would think.
Routine monitoring w/biopsy.
I've just been diagnosed with complete-type intestinal metaplasia antral. I do not have H Pylori. What does low spice mean? Do I need to not cook with turmeric, cumin, chili powder, curry powder, cayenne pepper, etc. I am on pantoprazole, but still have constant heartburn.
Thanks for the suggestion of low acid coffee and the Acid Watcher Diet.
