Developed hernia 4-5 months after Whipple surgery

Posted by kjc12 @kjc12, Aug 20, 2023

Has anyone been diagnosed with a hernia after their Whipple procedure. My husband’s Whipple was in Feb., 2023 and recently noticed protrusion on stomach. Primary care physician said it was a hernia, but to concentrate on getting stronger and gain weight after bad reactions to chemo. Any feedback would be appreciated as always.

Some patients complained that too.

I went 10 mos post Whipple before noticing a hernia. I have. cat scan every 3 months to monitor my chest & abdomen due to Crohn's and Pancreatic Cancer. My PanCan was found early due to the CT for Crohn's. Dx was stage 1. My current CT shows no bowel involvement with the hernia so my instructions were to ignore it unless it causes, pain, fever or other issues . It would be reviewed again at that time.

I, too, had a hernia about nine months post Whipple. It was not causing any problems but offended my sense of self! I consulted with two surgeons, both of whom said it would probably have to be dealt with at some point. (One surgeon wrote that my abdomen was “Swiss cheese like”! Repairing it meant abdominal wall reconstruction. One surgeon recommended permanent mesh. The other recommended absorbable mesh. I had the surgery in April of last year. So far I have not had any problems—no recurrence. The surgery was, compared to the Whipple, a
non-event. I am glad I decided to do it.
