Teenager with anxiety
Hi I have a daughter who has just been recently diagnosed with social anxiety general anxiety and panic disorder. She was prescribed sertraline but she couldn’t handle being on it due to the severe chest pain she was getting while being on it. Now they have prescribed her Prozac and I’m very scared to put her on it and I would just appreciate anybody who has a teenager who has been on Prozac and their experience. Thank you very much.

Hello @mlock. Dealing with any issue pertaining to our children can be so much more worrisome and stressful than issues of our own. 1 Reaction@mlock, how are you doing? Like you, I was concerned about my teenage daughter being prescribed Prozac (fluoxetine). The counselor understood and acknowledged my concerns and took time to explain to address my concerns. This alone gave me confidence that the prescription wasn't just being handed out as an "easy" fix. Even on a very low dose of 10 and 20mg, I saw a big change in my daughter's ability to face her anxiety and help her develop coping strategies and life habits that serve her well. She is no longer a teen and these coping skills and healthy habits as well as being older serve her well as she flourishes and thrives as a young adult no longer needing medication.
I share our story in the hopes that it helps. But I'm aware that every situation is different. I can imagine that your concern centers around your daughter's reaction to sertraline. Perhaps this article will provide some insight and questions to ask the prescribing doctor.

Has she tapered off sertraline? Will she start fluoxetine while tapering?

@mlock, here's the encouraging news. I don't remember what age she was when she started medication. At the time, I never thought I would forget that moment. I believe she was 15. She did not have any negative side effects, but a friend of hers did. Everyone is different.
It is good that your daughter's doctor is aware of her reaction risk and can react quickly like they did to her side effects with sertraline. Is your daughter nervous about trying another medication?
