Insert in femur never attached properly to bone after hip replacement

Posted by montanatom @montanatom, Aug 14, 2023

In August of 2021 I had complete right hip replacement surgery, I am male and was 60 years olds in very good health. From the time of the initial surgery I have had pain in my groin and down my leg, I also have strength and balance issues. After two years the doctor has determined the insert in the femur did not attach to the bone properly. Over the past two years they blamed the pain on multiple issues, left hip, pelvis, bursa etc. Finally X-rays showed a gap between the bone and insert. There is no infection or bone breakage. Has anyone else experienced this.

Ft Myers, Fl. Aka Ft Misery. Lousy health care. Sad it was great in 2003-2005.

Same here in Montana, we had a great hospital with skilled doctors, then it was bought out and turned into a destination hospital for people to come to and for their families to have a vacation while they recovered. It is all about the money now.

Guess Beth lost in Yellowstone! Destination hospital. Gather ours is too, 5 mins from Sanibel. Not that pretty now, after IAN many docs left town. Trying to follow. State is a mess.

Well, same surgeon did my TKR. 26 mo po Wrong size replacement and was done robotically! Not a revision candidate. Harvard trained. The greatest in the area, a leader in this area. In his mid 40’s. Had a following now there is a gag order from his former office. Tying to open on his own and on FB trying to find his past patients.

My criteria for a surgeon worked well for me, but are certainly not foolproof. There is no excuse for placing a prosthesis that doesn't fit. My surgeon explained that the prosthesis should not go past the surface of the bone. That is, there should be a small space between the edge of the bone and the edge of the prosthesis. This can be seen clearly on the X-rays.

My TKR was also done with the Stryker/Mako robotic assistant. I'm very sorry about what you are going through.

Mine on X-rays and florascope shows not much if any fat or muscle around the implant. You can see a ligament, in between the top and bottom. You can see a haze of the plastic piece I the back of the knee. This clicks when on the bike. I hold it in the gym till I get to full speed at 9. Yes, it’s a piece of work.

No, surgeon does not have any answers. An MRI showed tendonopathy in 2 tendons (surgeon didn’t think this was a big deal). So I saw a pain specialist (hence the cortisone injection and nerve block). An epidural has been suggested as the next step, but I do not feel the pain is radiating from my back. Pain is definitely in hip and groin. Thank you for your concern.

I have hip bursitis and osteoarthritis in my left hip. I will have a THR in September and am hoping the bursitis does not flare up.
Have you considered that you could be experiencing bursitis (which I have found can be as painful as the osteoarthritis)?

That could be a possibility. I will bring it up to the next surgeon I see. I think the treatment might be the same as I have been trying: ice, rest, injections, OTC meds?
Thank you!

Yes, I think that all of those will help. My bursitis was very sensitive to pressure from sleeping on my side, riding my recumbent bike. Once I started to sleep on my stomach, it relieved the pressure and it subsided. PT and ultrasound treatments also helped. Certainly worth asking a few questions to see if this could be playing a part in your pain.

Thank you again. I really appreciate your responses. I have not tried ultrasound yet. Had 2 months of PT which mainly helped with reducing scar tissue (my range of motion was already good).

Had complete hip replacement in October of 2022 - severe pain in the hip and leg - been back to doctor at least 10 times - X-ray every time - can't see anything wrong - went to another surgeon who is sending me for a nuclear bone scan - he says the only possible thing for all the pain is that the peg has not adhered to the leg - to fix it they need to do surgery again - way more invasive and longer recovery - not sure if I want to go through that again - i think the doctor that initially did the surgery (like them all) is making it more of a business - last time suggested to get a shot in my spine - might help he says - I am not getting a shot in my spine on the assumption that it might help. Would like to get another opinion but my insurance is making it challenging. any suggestions.?????

I had back back to back femur breaks on the same leg in 2017. I have had 3 surgeries on that one leg. I have had 2 injections in my spine. I have a pun in my hip. I just praise God for the good days and rub Life-Flo Magnesium lotion on the bad days and nights. I order it on line. It is the only relief I have found. When it rains, the stainless steel cable ties holding the rod in the femur ache like a bad toothache. However, I am still on the green side of the grass. Bless you and Prayers. Skeleton
