Hi @colojeda. Mayo Clinic Connect is a place for members and patients to share their experiences to help offer comfort and potential questions to ask their providers.

I'd like to invite @oretsina, @oceanblues123, @lesnkc, and @carolann01 who all discussed taking Boniva for osteoporosis.

I'd like to also invite @betterbones, @jb123mayo, @ebrezinsky, and @hsum4 who have all discussed taking Prolia.

@colojeda, when your provider decided on Boniva, was there also a discussion about prolia and if you are comfortable sharing, was there a particular reason Boniva was decided upon for you?

I was offered Prolia, but chose Boniva. I was told that the advantage to Boniva is that it keeps working even after you stop taking it, so there’s a greater likelihood that you can take lengthy breaks. I also like the fact that Boniva is monthly. The advantage of Prolia is that it’s injectable, and you can consume coffee and/or breakfast right away. The disadvantages to Prolia are that you must go into the office for injections, and it’s expected that you’ll continue taking it for life. If Boniva interferes with your digestion, Prolia is a better choice.

Oretsina here. I changed physicians and the new physician felt that, given that my bone density numbers were fine except for one area with a value of 1.9, an osteoporosis med was not warranted right now. Good news for me because I had extreme muscle soreness in my neck and shoulders when taking the drug. The version of Boniva I took was generic, made in India. I was to take the medication once a month. I took it only once.

I choose Bonvina because my gynecologist told me to take it.
but I see a endocrinologist ans an orthopedic surgeon and they suggest me take prolia.
that is the resason of my question : what is best prolia or Bonvina?

REPLY

My understanding is that Boniva is a beginner type drug and Prolia is a more powerful drug after other medications have been used. Prolia is stronger and the side effects can be intense.

I have been on Prolia for at least 8 years or more. I tried Evenity and could not tolerate it. So back on Prolia. I understand it works with your body to maintain a balance of normalcy in osteoclasts and osteoblasts. I also no longer have the swelling at the injection sites from Evenity and the bad back aches from the same drug.
