Any new treatments for SMZL? What do you take for maintenance?

Posted by trixie1 @trixie1, Aug 14, 2023

I was diagnosed with SMZL in January 2023. Have had 6 rounds of Rituxin and Bendamustine. Anything orally you can take for maintenance? Or is it just wait and see until spleen gets enlarged again ?

@trixie1, recently (Jan 2023) the FDA approved zanubrutinib (Brukinsa) for the treament of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), mantle cell lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma and Waldenström macroglobulinemia. It is an oral drug.

In another discussion, @sunfishgirl speaks of starting zanubrutinib for splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) here:

I'm tagging fellow SMZL-ers like @andilynn @scsimpson @stankent @elainejarrett @trevtwin @grand4 @caroldk @kayak4me @cdwilm27 @reneemp @pkh @theresad2 to bring them into this discussion to share their current treatments and any updates.

@trixie1, is Rituxin and Bendamustine no longer working for you?

When i had breast cancer in 2016 i had a lumpectomy and radiation. I was also put on an oral pill. I just finished the chemo/immunotherapy in June and feeling pretty good. My spleen is down to 15 so i was wondering if there was an oral pill for maintenance. Thanks for the information!

Hi @trixie1, that is a good question to ask your oncologist. Not all cancer have a maintenance oral therapy like AIs for breast cancer. For some cancers, surveilance is the maintenance strategy. I'm so glad that your spleen is down. Will you discuss the options for maintenance therapy for SMZL with your oncologist at your next follow-up and share what you learn?
