Mozart ear

I realized when I was a kid that my right ear is a bit odd, but only recently did I learn that the famous composer Mozart had an ear deformity that looks extremely similar to my own. I read that this particular deformity was named Mozart Ear and it seems to be extremely rare, so there's not much information on it. I was hoping someone might know if this is the same "condition" that I have. Picture of my own ear along with Mozart's ear provided for reference.

oh sorry now I read and understand it is there from birth... I thought from first comment that suddenly one ear had changed shape as aging; my apologies - reading comments too fast as there are so many every day want to read as many as I can; best wishes to all who have this and hopefully no increased risk of ear issues such as I and many others suffer from and thanks for sharing the personal photos and details ... J.

My son was also born with this ear condition - all of his pediatricians (and a pediatric ENT friend) have just shrugged it off. My son is seven now, and we have had is hearing tested very carefully and no problems have been detected in that ear.

One of my worries is that he will eventually become self conscious about the appearance of that ear and/or want to wear earbuds - this would require plastic surgery. Has anyone hear considered or had a corrective surgery performed for this particular deformity?

Hello! I’ve been doing research on Mozart ear for the last 5 months as my son was born with the ear deformity. He is a twin and his sister was not born with any ear deformities. He was in fact born with a severe tongue tie and has a lip tie as well. We visited the ENT and were told his canal was normal and his hearing is also normal. However, we were warned that he may be at risk of ear infections or potential hearing loss in the future? Our insurance denied molding to be done so now we just sit and wait and cross our fingers that it doesn’t cause problems. I did read that there is a possible link between ear deformities and renal issues. I don’t have any suspicion of that but yes, it does make me concerned for the future. Any input from others would be helpful as there’s such limited information available!

Congratulations on your beautiful babies. My son turned 5 this week and to date he has had no issues whatsoever with pain, sickness or hearing loss from his Mozart ear. I hope this information is similar for your little guy and can ease some concerns and that your beautiful healthy family thrives.

Hi, I was in my 40s before anyone noticed. I knew they were a different shape which made over ear hearing protection or headphones uncomfortable if they had a flat inner surface, as it put pressure on the cartilage instead of the softer bits of the outer ear. So I wouldn’t worry too unduly, people look at your face, not into your ear generally 😉
