Small intestine bacterial overgrowth

Posted by momochan @momochan, Apr 6, 2016

Hi, I have been suffering from small intestine bacterial overgrowth since last Jan. Have gone through a few courses of antibiotics, but whenever it finished, it came back and the stool got loose. I really am desperate, could anyone have suggestion? .

By the way, FODMAP says you shouldn’t take any of the kind of medication or supplements you mention whilst on the diet.

I have continued burping, except when sleeping. I have had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound, MRI on my Liver, hydrogen breath test & blood test. (I have just ask for a stool sample test today.) My diagnosis was SIBO (with a borderline hydrogen breath test results). My only symptom is continued burping, and some fatigue. No pain, diarrhea, weight loss, etc.as I read most others with SIBO experience. I have taken 2 antibiotics, Cipro & Xifaxen. Taken 2 different probiotics, and digestive enzymes. Eliminated sugars, alcohol and dairy foods. NOTHING has helped. I’m waiting to see my doctor. Can you suggest any other possible causes. Gradual burping symptoms started while traveling in Europe this summer. They were gradual at first, but by February 1st, I was plagued with burping most all the time.

I'm looking for help for this, too. It's very depressing to say the least as I've had it for years. Keeping my social life to a bear minimum which is pretty sad. I just signed up here (Aug 12, 2018) so am desperate for help. Wishing you luck with your pain and symptoms, too.

Hi @dc2525,

I was wondering how you were feeling; would you be able to share a few more details about how you are managing? I can imagine it must be stressful to go out and socialize; I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, is this chat still active? I have been struggling with SIBO for a few years now. I'm about to do the bacteria-killing protocol again (antifungal called Fluconosone, followed by antibiotic called Flagyl, followed by another round of the antifungal). I am on Fodmaps diet and I take a probiotic from Metagencs (its the only one I've found I can tolerate). My problem is that if I stray from Fodmaps diet even a little, the bacteria comes back, so I have to take antibiotic every 1-2 years. I am wondering if I should advocate for Xifacan (sp?) the antibiotic that is specific for SIBO? Do people have a probiotic they swear by? Would like to do more than just keep this issue in check, is there anyone out there that has truly defeated this thing??

I only need help with constipation. This is very stressful, I'm so tired of taking stool softeners and laxatives.

Try 500 mg of Magnesium Citrate before bed, it will also help you sleep.

It doesn't take much to have it come back, I can't eat fructose including fruit, a few days of cheating, like Christmas, and I'm sick for a few months. I just go back on my Strick diet and it eventually it goes away.
