Prolia added to Eligard and Erleada

Posted by kpgnsm @kpgnsm, Aug 7, 2023

My oncologist wants to add Prolia injections to my maintence routine of Eligard every 3 months and Proleada every day. Has anyone else had experience with taking these three at the same time?

My tertosterone and PSA are down to unmeasurable levels after 6 months of Eligard and Erleada but he wants to add the injections of Prolia to my therapy. However I get tired quickly a ready and I do not want to be like a zombie with another drug to sap my energy if there is another way. He says I need the Prolia to strengthen my bones even more. I take Caltrate twice a day and D once a day.

@kpgnsm - if you are comfortable sharing, have you been on any other medications for osteoporosis or will this be your first?

I have not taken Eligard. I did take Reclast for 2 years prior to Prolia. I had no side effects from Reclast. It was not increasing my bone density enough. I have had 3 Prolia shots and due to get my 4th shot in September. I have not experienced fatigue. I had a Dexa after one year on Prolia and had a .5 increase in my spine! I was elated. Two of my neighbors are on Prolia. One is taking breast cancer medication and Prolia. She has had no side effects. The other neighbor has no side effects but also has not had much improvement in her bone density. Hope this helps

Hi All,
I am responding to Justin's request for comment on responces to Prolia treatment. So far, I have only had 2 shots of Prolia, so my input is not "time tested".
Also, I have a few medical conditions that have the miserable symptom of fatigue. My fatigue levels, which can be severe, have not shown any difference with the addition of Prolia.
Sadly, it seems there is not a deep understanding of fatigue; the causes or the cure. Hopefully, you have understanding and patient supports.
My sympathies to all who are waylaid by this problem.

Hi
So Im a retired RN and my experience with Prolia is through patients but more so with my own mother. She was on it for 12 mos and had a 9% gain, then the 2nd year no gains no losses.. Then part way into the 2nd year she suffered an atypical femur fracture as a result of taking the Prolia.
A small percentage of people have this happen and its outlined in the literature.
They has definitely made me rethink Prolia. She had no falls or mis steps, she had been walking on the treadmill and staying in shape during Covid. It just fractured.
She does have severe osteoporosis among other conditions that put her at higher risk.

She has switched to Evenity now and while its a little inconvenient to do a monthly injection, so far so good.

Your situation is different and your physician is correct that Prolia should help decrease your bone loss and improve things. I personally like Evenity but there may be reasons he doesnt want to use that. I will say Ive not seen a patient with fatigue from taking Prolia and My Mom never experienced that.

Many medical conditions and medications can really due a number on those bones. Simply taking calcium and Vit D isnt enough. Some medications work by slowing down your bodies own destruction of bone to allow more time to build and others help build.

I can tell you that if you are over 50, provided you have contraindication, Calcium Citrate is better absorbed than Calcium carbonate. I will also tell you that when you take Calcium Carbonate it should be alone and not with other medications as a general rule. It can impact the absorption of those other medications .

Citrical makes a calcium citrate 1200 mg( 2 tablets) slow release.
Make sure you ask your physician if you can do a nutrition consult and maybe go over some changes that might help boost your energy.

When Mom was going through radiation and cancer care we found her using EnsureMax 30G protein drinks a couple a day combined with a multi vitamin Iron and extra C really helped her energy. But be sure to consult with your medical team before making ANY changes to your diet and supplements.

🙂

I am replying to this post because of your invitation.

I did not experience fatigue from my five Prolia injections over two and a half years. I did discontinue Prolia primarily because I feel it caused extreme hair loss. I cannot prove this but Amgen (manufacturer) admits there were reports of hair loss after product went to market.

I also developed a chronic sore throat after my first injection. I’ve been diagnosed with LPR (acid issue) so maybe unrelated but the timing makes me suspicious.

I am now taking Evista, prescribed by process of elimination. There is a risk of blood clots with this medication but my endocrinologist felt comfortable with it as I have not had clots in the past.

I also take supplements for hair, bones, etc.

Not due for a scan until next year, but I’ll post at that time.

Best wishes to all regarding this seemingly complicated condition. Cindy

Thank you.....what interests me is that the Prolia seems to be more for women and for the spine whereas my cancer was prostate that went to my verterbrae. rib, and lung and the Dexascan showed my spine to be fine but that my hip was at 78% the Eligard and Erleada I am on both cause fatigue so my concern is the RISK of more fatigue and CV effects vs perhaps minimal impovement in spine and unknown help to the hip bones.

@kpgnsm
I did have improvement in my hips as well. My bone density was -2.4 and after a year on Prolia it was -2.2. I have not experienced fatigue on Prolia nor have friends that are currently on Prolia. I wish you well and hope this is helpful. I am sorry to hear of your prostate cancer. My husband has it also. He had his prostate removed and will start radiation this fall.
Best Wishes!

Thank you for your comment. My concern is that the Erleada and Eligard already cause me fatigue and the addition of another medication causing fatigue is really going to slow me down even more.

Best of luck to your husband.. It has been 15 years since I had my prostate out.

I have not been on any other osteo drugs and the reason why he wants to add the Prolia is that my Dexascan showed my hip to be 78 and also my recurrent prostate cancer (for which I had three sessions of radiation were to a vertebrae and rib. There has been no indication of any cancer in my hip or spine and my PSA an tertosterone are both unmeasurable after the 6 moths of Eligard and Erleada
