Ice Therapy Machines

Posted by doll53 @doll53, Aug 5, 2023

Hello, group! I’m new here. I bought an ice therapy machine to use after my TKR only to find out my doctor doesn’t approve of them. He won’t give me any guidance on how long on and how long off to use it, how often, etc. All I can find online is follow your doctor’s recommendations. Anybody use one and if so, how did you use it? Can’t find any negatives about it. Had 3 therapists tell me they’re great. But they work for the hospital/doctor, so….
Thanks!

Hello,
I have had 4 joint replacements in 2 1/2 years (2 hips and 2 knees). I'm 54 years old with osteoarthritis. I'm 16 weeks out on my right knee and 9 weeks out on the left knee. I used ice packs that were flexible to go around your knee I had four different kinds of ice packs and they were still cheaper than the ice machine that doesn't seem to get very cold. I had rented an ice machine on my first hip replacement replacement, I wasn't a fan of it.

Hello, I had a Reverse Shoulder Replacement in January and my Surgeon highly recommended a Donjoy Aircast motorized unit. (He broke his ankle and said it was the best purchase he made)
It's absolutely amazing and gave me so much pain relief that I slept with it on! It has a very gentle cool compression that really does the job. Provides cooling all around and keeps the swelling down.
There are countless positive reviews online especially for knee replacement.
Don't get the manual version because you'll go crazy trying to keep the flow going.
I still use it for all my back and neck issues.
Btw I'm told insurance doesn't cover it, but it was worth every penny.
Here's the company direct link; https://www.dme-direct.com/aircast-cryo-cuff-ic-motorized-cooler
Good luck!

I LOVED my ice machine!!! I was so thankful a friend dropped theirs off! Used it everyday until I didn’t need it.
Used it as much as I wanted. Kept the swelling down as well as the pain. Would not be without one if I ever had to do TKR again!

I was given an ice machine when discharged from the hospital after my TKR. I used it for a couple of weeks, but changed to large gel ice packs that I found more effective.

I am 4 and a half months TKR. I used the ice machine frequently for the first 3 months. It was great for pain relief and swelling reduction. I set the machine to run for 30 minutes and off for thirty minutes. I found it to be extremely important for my recovery. I still occasionally use it after going to the gym for a pilates class or strength class. Hope you find relief using it as well.

My young ortho surgeon (in his 30’s) sent me home with cryocuff machine for both my reverse total shoulder and my total knee replacement and it was awesome really the only thing that helped pain. Quit narcotics after a couple days because I dint think they did much of anything besides constipation. I believe I left in on up to an hour at a time with TKR because I was suppose to get up and walk every hour. Am 2 years and 3 months to date my knee is awesome!
Once surgeon has done their job your physical therapist ( mine is young 28 when I started with him, a DPT with many other credentials) should be your lifeline. I feel a great surgeon, a great therapist and hard work on our parts gets us back to everyday life.
Best of luck!

I used an ice machine after my total hip replacement and it really helped. My brother then used it for his knee surgery. I recommend it!

My wife is having TKR (total knee replacement) on August 9, 2023 and the ice machine was recommended, it is a total “game changer “!

My Dr. also did not recommend them however I insisted and of course he did order one for me. However he also didn't recommend PT because he said that I could do what I needed at home. I also insisted and he wrote an order for PT. There was nothing more valuable than going for PT to the outpatient facility and they used the exact machine I got for 15 minutes every time I had PT before I left as well as stimulation with it. I highly recommend both. I had my ice machine only for about 4-5 weeks as it was rented but I was thankful for having it for that time. It also used a pump to squeeze my leg to prevent blood clots as well.

Your Dr didn't recommend physical therapy AFTER a TKR??????? Get a new surgeon.
