Tear duct blockage after cataract surgery

Posted by jc100 @jc100, Aug 2, 2023

My right lower eye lid near the nose has been slightly swollen and red since my cataract surgery 5 months ago. It was not there before the surgery. Will it heal naturally? I pointed it out to my surgeon, she recommended warm compress.

Mu husband has been suffering for over a year with what we thought was eyelashes growing toward his eyes after cataract surgery. Finally he got into an ophthalmologist that found his problem DRY EYE! He started on Xiidra drops and has had the first two of four IPL treatments and his eyes finally have relief. He uses the baby shampoo daily in the shower to wash his lids. Also when his eyes are irritated he puts a heated bean bag on his eyes for 10 minutes then massages the lids to help open the oil glands.

The reason for warm compress is to open the tiny glands at the lash line that are clogged. I’m not sure if this is any different than dry eye treatment. For convenience I use a eye scrub which is a terrible name. It’s a towelette that can remove any crusting and helps the glands to express the plugs. The warm compress opens the glands and using a q-tip with very gentle stroking can express their contents I always use sterile eye drops on the q-tip first. I suppose your eye doctor feels confident that the tear gland will open up on its own. It does keep your eyes well lubricated because people with dry eyes purposely have the ducts plugged
