Partial Knee Replacement: Post-op pain

Posted by l2consulting @l2consulting, Jul 23, 2019

Had to take an Oxycodone last night...had pain that kept me from being able to sleep. I have been doing so well but ice, elevation, and Advil didn't cut it. I was active yesterday but I think I twisted my leg with an awkward movement doing my stairs...or perhaps the 3000 steps i walked. I am discouraged as I am 3 weeks pos op today and feel I should be past this kind of pain.

Hi! I am 3 1/2 weeks past having had replaced the right medial compartment of my left knee. My exercises feel fine and my range of motion is good, but walking still feels lousy and I need a cane (even to walk 1-2 blocks). When I walk I feel popping quite a bit (generally it feels better afterwards) and I also feel a pain which feels like it’s just under the kneecap/in the front part of the knee. I don’t know if this is all due to continued swelling and is normal, or if there is some misalignment of the kneecap possibly (even if I didn’t replace that part of the knee) or something else going wrong. Just wondering if these are normal symptoms or not, because I thought walking would feel better by now.

Swelling is very slowly abating but still worsens by the end of each day; also ai have finally moved just to Tylenol.

Hi @l2consulting - maybe they don't prescribe PT for partial knee replacements. I don't have experience with partials. But if you are wondering or concerned, I would just go on the portal and ask your OS if PT might be worthwhile. Does that sound like something you could be comfortable doing?

Ah, most Doctors do prescribe PT, I had the Oxford knee replacement (partial knee replacement and underwent nearly 3 months of PT to the point I was tired of it and asked to quit PT. However, I had the sugrery in May 2023 and am not exactly happy with the results. It is difficult to tell anyone where the pain is, posterior knee, anterior right side of front of knee, etc. It seems to have its own mind on when and where to manifest itself re: the pain. I do limp when walking and find it difficult to get in and out of a car, cannot walk too far-maybe 1/2 mile is ok but further is somewhat painful.
I've been back to the surgeon three times and he think IU might have a torn meniscus and gave an injection and now I'm waiting on an MRI next week.
