Having a hollow sound when chewing, after a long sinus infection.

Posted by mellow1 @mellow1, Jul 25, 2023

For the past month, I have been treated by a teledoc, urgent care PA and a PA at my PCP's office with a round of antibiotics, then a z-pack, prescription nose spray, double dose of prednizone for what was diagnosed as a severe allergy infection (which I get once or twice a year). This time however, my ears were stopped up for the first time. They continued to be stopped up after the other symptoms subsided. I have also tried exercises, massages, steam, etc. Yesterday my ears started popping and I thought I was on the way to recovery. However, this afternoon, I started hearing a loud hollow sound in the worst ear, while chewing. Oh, I forgot to mention that I have had the subtle ringing, buzzing, heartbeat sounds for years and have never been seen/treated for it since the time I did see an ENT and have my hearing tested, it was beyond perfect. What could be going on?

@mellow1, sinus infections are horrid. Like you, I used to get them twice a year almost like clockwork. I have found in recent years using a Neti pot at the first sign of feeling like my sinuses are getting stuffed up has helped me avoid them.

But to your more immediate concern about the ear popping and hollow sound while chewing. I'm tagging fellow helpful members like @rocknrobbn @sueinmn @nrd1 @303wendy @snoopy108 @casey1329 @ess77, who may have some thoughts for you.

It seems like you have already been experiencing low level tinnitus or pulsatile tinnitus. Has the ringing and buzzing increased as well?

My husband had this, and it turned out to be a mastoid bone infection. He had several rounds of antibiotics, and started doing Flonase, and it subsided in a few months. However, it seems to be back again. The condition was verified by MRI the first time around. Wishing you luck

Thank you, so much. So sorry your husband is having to deal with that again. I will ask the ENT to consider this, if there isn’t another immediate diagnosis. Best of luck to your husband as well.
