I have had MAC for two years. Am under the care of a Pulmnologist; nebulize daily with 7% saline. I had pnuemonia in April, iron deficiency, dehydration and lost 10 pounds. Took Doxycyline and and recovered by end of May. This month I am coughing for five hours every morning bringing up a little Sputum an a lot of foam. The coughing gives me a sore throat. Never happened before. Will see my doctor the first of August and hope to get some answers. I don't handle antibiolitics well so have chosen to not take the "the big three." I do exercise, drink a lot of water and eat well. So shall see what happends.
I had a little persistent cough with some episodes of horrid coughing before my abnormal CT’s. The docs didn’t take it seriously.
Once I had the “terrible CT” and saw a pulmonologist, he was very concerned and diagnosed me with asthma and gave me meds to get my PND under control. That helped some and got rid of the horrid coughing episodes. After my culture for Mac was negative, Mayo switched my inhaler to one with a steroid and gave me their triple spray for PND. The nagging little cough improved remarkably within 24 hours of the switch. I do airway clearance faithfully, but don’t produce sputum.
what is your experience? When you take meds,do you still have some cough without caughing up anything except clear mucus from your throat? So in other words, even if you take medication (I am now only on azithromycin and clofazimine; was on amykacin IV for three months) can you still cough? Does it mean your meds do not work? my pulmonologist said unless I have a ct scan we won't know if I am getting better and she is not planning to do it soon. I used to cough nonstop before I started the treatment in April.

My cough stopped totally during the big3/amikacin treatment for 28 months (CT's never actually cleared, but did become stable). 6 months after that, a cough came back and after 8 months of Dr visits at 2 hospitals, it was diagnosed as aspergillis (No MAC). I am being treated for it now.
thank you for the info'
