has anyone experienced a full thickness hamstring tear and what to do

Posted by suerc @suerc, Jul 10, 2023

I am 65. I have a full thickness hamstring tear and the Dr's don't want to do anything about it as they say the surgery to fix it at my age is to mush. He said all I could do is try injections to help. but he didn't tell me what injections. any Ideas please ?

@suerc. It's puzzling to me that a provider would say that "at your age" is too much. I haven't heard that personally as an excuse for treatment but my father did when he was in his 80's (for a different condition). I'd like to offer my support in suggesting you get another opinion. I was 67-years-old when I had a total hip replacement (I'm 71 years old now). In between the time of the initial consultation and the hip surgery I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had a hysterectomy. I consulted with my orthopedic surgeon at the time and he said to re-schedule the hip surgery for a few months later.

I haven't torn a large muscle like a hamstring but I did tear my rotator cuff in 2008. I had a surgical repair and with PT and healing time that shoulder is in very good shape.

So, back to what to do? You have an MRI and can send that to another orthopedic department. Would you like to request an appointment at Mayo Clinic? If so, here is the link:

@suerc That’s a very good plan. Will you let me know how this works out?

Water aerobics and water walking, especially!
