Preparing for upcoming colostomy surgery-any clues on what to expect?
Hello - We are preparing for upcoming colostomy surgery. Anyone willing to share their recent experiences? We really don't know what to expect: recovery time, training, follow-up visits, return to work etc. Hospital is 6 hours away, so also trying to figure out how long to plan to stay. Thank You!

My dad had a colostomy and it wasn’t pretty. We used to help him change his bag, but that was years ago. My sister has an ileostomy, and that ain’t pretty either. I was told after having a sigmoid colon resection that I may need an ileostomy; I’d rather die
THANK YOU 🙏🏻
I have not had the some overall positive results. Please ask your surgeon about all the possible side effects. Hopefully your experience will better than mine. You may experience everything from recurring rectal area pressure, lower pelvic area pain, and hernia from the illostomy area. Also experiment with the various ostomy supplies out there.

How did the surgery go?
I will need to fly home after surgery. How long do you think that they will make me stay around before I fly home?
Hello all - I wanted to update you on our experience. My husband received an "end" colostomy on Friday the 23rd. We were in the hospital (Rochester) until Tuesday. He has a slow progressing form of ALS with mobility and dexterity issues, which probably added a day to our hospital stay, and then I believe we had an extra day just trying to find a home health organization in our hometown to follow-up with us (due to a nurse shortage in our area). After discharge, we stayed 3 nights in a hotel-really more for peace of mind, than true need. We made the 6 hour drive home on Friday. He did fine, worst part was finding a family restroom during the drive. Today is day 10 and he worked (from home) all day. His appetite is voracious - which is a big change from the last 6 months! The surgeon and nurses and training were all absolutely PHENOMENAL! While we are still adjusting, it does seem like it will become routine and manageable!
I'm glad to hear things went well! I prayed for a smooth surgery and hospital stay for you. Take care!
