Correlation between peripheral neuropathy and low RBC?

Posted by Ray Kemble @ray666, Jul 1, 2023

I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. I've no pain but terrible balance. I also have two swollen feet. Doctors noticed my swollen feet long before I received my PN diagnosis, but they've never figured out why. I also have a low RBC (red blood count), for which I have seen a hematologist; he didn't appear to be terribly alarmed. I'm wondering: Do any of you with PN also have swollen feet? And has anyone (doctor-type) linked it to your PN? Same thing for a low RBC: Have any of you had a low RBC connected in some credible way to your PN? I'd sure love to know.

If any of you are taking pregabalin, what mg are you taking daily? It is supposed to not have some of the side effects that gabapentin (which most people take) have. I still have alot of pain and keep wondering if I should up the 2 x 25 mg a day-sure I will check with dr before changing; but still want to know what most people are taking
Thanks!! Betty G

I have severe PN. It’s in both feet up to the bottom of my knees. I also have Charcot feet. My feet swell up all the time and under different circumstances. If I walk too much (anything over 40 feet), and when I sleep with no pressure on my feet. I wear compression socks 24/7 except when my feet swell too much at night and the pressure causes pain. I do have a lot of pain from the nerves and I can get an ulcer in my feet that typically gets infected causing a hole in my foot.

Hi, jclare5269 (@jclare5269)

It sounds like your situation is far more uncomfortable. I'm lucky in that sense, I guess; my feet are simply swollen. I wear my compression stockings, but not that many hours each day. Maybe I should wear them more, but after months and months of watching the swelling––sometimes it's more, sometimes less––that's what got me wondering if the swelling is entirely linked to my PN.

Good question that hopefully a doctor can answer. My PN is more severe and they told me that I would have swelling of my feet. Though I am confused about you not having any pain. I have a lot of pain on the inside of my feet. On the outside of my feet, my nerves are dead or asleep so I have no feeling in my feet unless it’s a really hard contact and it hurts from the inside out. It’s also affected my balance or equilibrium. I have to take things slow or I have problems. I’m not diabetic and they have not found the cause.

marylin14, perhaps you might try another type of Magnesium. You don't say which kind you used. I take 1,000 mg of Magnesium Citrate daily. Often I take 1,500 mg. If you take too much for your body, you may end up with diarrhea. Citrate supposedly enables Magnesium to be better absorbed. I take half in the morning and half at night.

Sorry it doesn’t help you, can your doctors recommend another supplement that may?

Magnesium citrate is a great suggestion. I was taking that also, but stopped it for my chemo.
