Change in sputum after stopping Big 3

Posted by dulwich @dulwich, Jun 22, 2023

I stopped antibiotics two months ago and have had some increase in sputum
I am otherwise well and likely still free of MAC
Have others noticed this??

Hello! So my wife stopped antibiotics the end of April. She says she didn't notice much difference, but I (as a care lover) do believe there are more coughing up phlegm episodes than when she was on the big 3. There are some studies that show antibiotics can reduce inflammation. I would believe the reduced inflammation in your lungs would help reduce mucus. But I'm no doctor, just an observer. She did experience an exacerbation which was scary. Not sure what triggered it, but she was coughing up significantly more phlegm all day long. We finally contacted her infectious disease doctor and he prescribed Levaquin 750 mg a day for 5 days. He said it was for "an infection in the lungs that causes more sputum and fatigue." He was spot on. Within one day, she was significantly better. So my advice, if start producing a significant amount of phlegm in a day, contact your doctor and share you think you might be having an exacerbation. Each exacerbation can contribute to more lung damage. Glad you're off the big 3!
