Leaky gut?

Posted by nanceedee @nanceedeefeperi, Jan 26, 2018

Hello, I’m hoping to connect with others who may be able to Help with some answers with what I’m dealing with. I have fibromyalgia and am gluten intolerant. I also have eczema that has spread over different parts of my body. My dr prescribed a steroid to help with the eczema, however I am extremely itchy with a rash on arms
Legs torso. Dr thinks it’s all related but I’m not sure
I have had bouts with heart burn s d constipation/diarrhea. I’ve been reading up about leaky gut syndrome and think I have many of
The symptoms. Any tips as to how I can go about this would be appreciated. I’m in the ER now because of severe fatigue feeling faint s d shallow breathing.

I want to know if Dr. Gundry's program and medicine for "leaky gut" a scam? Lucien

Re-read the first sentence up there.

Functional medicine relies on useless labs for made-up illnesses which they treat with supplements. They throw supplements at symptoms as well. The "specialty" is not based in rigorous science.

That is not my experience w/ a functional medicine doctor or my training as a coach. Of course, there are some drs who prescribe a lot of supplements just as conventional docs prescribe a lot of medicines, many detrimental to one's health, many hit or miss bc they are aiming to suppress symptoms. My experience is quite different, always looking for natural ways 1st. There are very few excellent doctors in any arena that are good diagnosticians, well-read, curious, and competent. It's very important to find ones that you respect and have what you want/need. Just bc a dr has a label, GI doc, FM doc, or has degrees from prestigious institutions does not make them a good dr. My experience is learn and research all you can, and then choose carefully.

The actual term for leaky gut is intestinal permeability, which can occur with some diseases. It's not a cause of the myriad symptoms snake oil salespeople and functional medicine doctors claim it is.

I can only speak from my experience. My functional medicine doctor, using traditional lab tests, helped my Sjogerns and osteoporosis more than my rheumatologist did. She used the 4 Rs of gut healing and I am thankful that I chose this path for my healing. I take no prescription drugs, use food and well thought out supplementation to keep my conditions in check. I will always believe that “leaky gut” is real. Science will eventually catch up and prove this. One of my favorite quotes by Hippocrates …
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

I have no idea what you’re experience has been. But it seems like you’re painting all functional medicine as bad. That’s not fair. Just as it would be unfair to treat western medicine doctors as all bad.
Every person’s experience is unique and they need to find who and what works for them.

@tabithatwitch,
It sounds, then, like your situation has improved! Because in your initial post you said and sounded quite desperate. So maybe you found something that works for you? And that something isn’t going to make your “bowels dependent”. Psyllium fiber? Please share what’s working!

Tabithatwitch,
Where did you have your prolapse surgery? Glad it went well. Did they use mesh?

Amen to that.🙏 I am a believer in that motto! After many tests and upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, my Gastro put me on low FODMAP diet, no drugs, and I am on a regular work out program, weights., swimming, Zumba, treadmill. Very restrictive on what I eat, but at the point now I can have a spoonful of Cookies and Cream every once in awhile….yummm.! So happy for u and wishing u many blessings. NOW, U can feel somewhat normal, and u have a name for it, so u can tackle this and find what works for you❤️.

@tabithatwitch, @baz, and all...I'm so sorry you folks are having such a tough time with this. I've suffered from IBD, diarrhea for most of my adult life, often very difficult to control, and then constipation for the last several years. A doctor at Mayo helped me tremendously when he diagnosed a leaky gut which is actually a legitimate problem. He referred me to Probulin, an excellent probiotic I buy online from Research Verified. This has changed my life! I was taking an over-the-counter probiotic but this is miraculous. I take one capsule nightly and no longer have the constant issues I did for decades.

I will tell you I bought Dr. Gundry's biome supplements and take them now. I've had good results. I'm not sure if I'll reorder, but probably not as I think the Probulin is truly excellent and doing the job I need. I also take a UTI supplement from Research Verified as I was having 3-5 UTIs every year, one with sepsis, and all quite difficult to treat. I began having problems with antibiotics due to this constant use and was even prescribed antibiotics prophylactically. I now handle the antibiotic issue with my own solution...at the first sign of diarrhea, I take a Lamotil and begin taking a 2nd Probulin in the morning, 2 daily as long as I take antibiotics. This enables me to take the necessary medications and the added supplement for UTIs works wonders as well. I've only had one this year! That's a record.

I hope some of this may help someone as you go through this crazy health journey. Blessings, elizabeth

What is the name of UTI supplement? My mother is old and sits around too much and she gets UTI every 5-6 months. Thanks
