Constant constipation

Posted by gastrochic @gastrochic, Dec 30, 2022

What more do you have to do. I suffer from this a lot. Magnesium citrate, liquid, helped me, but since the recall, there is none. It bums me out, because it would help me once in a while. I did get the fiber capsules, but I'm still backed up. Going to ask Dr maybe to increase my Reglan (sp)? The constant bloating just sucks. And honestly watch the water. I think the levels of chlorine they are putting in the water are hurting a lot of people's digestive systems, because it's poison. My water is so bad at my house, the city won't do anything but call the cops on me, while my health deterriates. And now have to pay culligan for safe drinking water for my family and pets. Just be careful. Stomach pills is a huge money maker. Any advice on being more regular would be helpful. I'm only taking 2 capsules a day, maybe I need more? It's the one with the phylum husks (sp).
Thank you and God Bless.

Gastrochic,

I know what you're going through. One thing that helps is Miralax - one dose every night with water at bedtime. It won't work miracles, but at a minimum I think it prevents hard stools and lessens the need for stimulant laxatives. I wait about 5 days between taking a stimulant. I'd like to stop that but don't have much of a choice. anyway, things go more smoothly if you take my meaning.

Good luck. It's very frustrating.

Joe

Thank you! I'm willing to try anything at this point. Not a huge fan of all the stomach pills at the store, it's ridiculous and money makers, all I can think of.

Constipation virtually stopped when I stopped taking Ondansetron for nausea. I am not a health care professional and not suggesting this will work for you as I am just sharing my personal experience. Please check with your health care professional before changing any medications.

When you are constipated, sometimes adding fiber supplements just adds to the bulk in your system which can be a problem if you have hard stools. What works for me, recommended by my GI Dr, is fiber twice a day (psyllium or Citrucel) close to lunch and dinner time. (My Dr said Citrucel is less likely to cause excess gas.) In between the fiber, about mid-day, I take a dose of Miralax. I've found I can take slightly less than recommended for best results. I was also taking 4 oz of prune juice in the morning but stopped because of it's high sugar content.

Oh thank you!! I will be trying this soon. I did this mixture once with lemon juice, honey, olive oil, it's like a natural lubricant. I don't know that I can stop my reagalen because of my gastreoparasis.

Possibly ask your gi if something else that doesn’t constipate. Often other drugs for same condition but not same side effect.

I noticed that you mentioned taking Reglan. I would avoid that. Very constipating.
You can also try some type of oil at bedtime. Mineral, olive. I do 1 tbsp. Not as bad as you would think. Pretty much tasteless.
Smooth Move Tea will also do it for me. How long you let it steep determines how strong it will be. I’m pretty resistant and it works for me in a matter of hours. If I’m really backed up, I’ll drink a cup of warm prune juice with a pat of melted butter first. Gag! But, between those two things I can almost guarantee, you will definitely have relief soon!

Why butter mixed in with warm prune juice?

Apparently an old midwife remedy for constipation for expectant mothers.

Has anyone used enemas regularly for elimination?

I live on a plant based diet except for salmon once a week. Magnesium Oxide will help, 1000mg in over the counter versions containing it, but I just took the vitamins. I eat oatmeal with 4 prunes and a TB of ground flax for breakfast. My smoothie mid morning is Fage fat=free yogurt, 1 TB ground flax, 1 TB almonds, 2 Dried figs, and 1/2 c almond milk. My lunch is a Dr. praeger black bean burger on a WASA cracker with avocado and salsa. My afternoon snack is homemade gluten free pumpkin/chocolate chip muffins with ground flax in them. My dinner is an all raw veggie salad. No bread or flour products except for the muffins I make and the WASA crackers. So gluten free plant base diet. I take 2 docusate sodium after dinner and 2 Senokot before bed. My colon became non-functional after 3 occurrences of Ovarian Cancer, 4 abdominal surgeries, and all the chemo.

So, solving constipation is an individual journey. I would say, start with the plant diet and Magnesium Oxide - 250 mg and increase until it works, up to 1000 mg. Famotidine can cause constipation, so it will take experimentation. My situation is very different because of all the surgeries and adhesions and neuropathy and a tortuous colon have resulted in no "natural" stimulation for bowel movements. I am 73 and gastroenterologists have said to take whatever works. There just isn't one answer for chronic constipation. Even the Linzess advertised on TV does not phase me.
