I have anemia and low blood Platelets due to previous drinking.

Posted by cherylgeo @cherylgeo, Jun 19, 2023

I have severe bleeding from my gums and nose and it is becoming intolerable. I feel so ashamed that I did this to myself through drinking. Has anyone else had this horrid problem as it's ruining my life.

I would show pictures of the amount of blood mainly on a night but it is shocking 😲

Hello @cherylgeo, this has to be very frightening for you. Bleeding from the gums and nose can be very serious. If it’s happening so frequently that it’s disruptive to your life, this really needs to be followed up with your doctor or a hematologist who specializes in blood disorders. You may have something going on that’s not related to your previous drinking.

Low platelets can account for the excess bleeding and finding the cause will be important. You’re bleeding way too much which can cause anemia and can be indicative of more serious health issues.

A CBC and a liver panel might be a good place to start with narrowing down whether this is a blood related problem or a liver related issue. Are your red blood cells (RBC) and Hemoglobin counts low in relation to your platelets? Have you had a lot of infections or illnesses lately?

I have lots of problems. .
I had a crainiotomy 5 years ago due to an aneurysm that I had clipped
Degenerative dic disease
Spinal stenosis in one leg
Ehlers danlos type 4
Rhumatoid arthritis.
Anemia and thrombocytopenia
Cirrhosis of my liver
And now this problem for over 2 years
I had a blood transfusion two weeks ago as my full blood count was 75.
I've had 2 platelet transfusion before dentistry
I feel so down and exhausted.
I'm under a haematology consultant but havnt been able to see him for over a year as uk is very problematic right now
I could cry right now writing this as I can't get anyone to listen to me. I'm frightened and I was a fit young woman in the army years ago.
I'm now 58 and I feel like I will never have a life with this horrible bleeding. I truly appreciate the messages on here already. Thankyou.

Oh my goodness, Cheryl, you are in a world of hurt. I wish I could reach through this computer to give you a hug. You’ve been through so much medically in your life already and that alone is stressful and draining. I’m so sorry you haven’t been able to get in to see your hematologist for over a year! I can only imagine how hopeless and abandoned you must be feeling.
This level of bleeding you’re having isn’t normal and can be quite dangerous if you cut yourself or have any internal bleeding. Is there anyway to get an emergency consultation? You were in the army, are there any veteran services that could assist you in getting some medical help?

@cherylgeo One other thing I wanted to mention, there is a Mayo Clinic based in London. You may wish to request an appointment to be seen there if it’s at all feasible for you. Mayo is an experience like no other and they offer hope.

Here is the website for the London based clinic. You’ll see a Request Appointment prompt, first thing on the page.

What do you think? This is another option for you other than your usual medical care in the UK.

Cheryl I have such a heavy heart reading your post. I will ask my ladies in our bible study group to pray for you.
I have MDS with a very low platelet count. My hematologist put me on a week of a steroid called prednisone. It brought my count up and now we are waiting to see how long it will last.

Oh thank you as I am a woman of faith and I ask for God's help every night. I will ask my haematology consultant and ask about steroids. I'm also going to ask about testing my spleen as a previous kind person brought me to a maybe! Apart from a scan of my liver I've had no other tests. Just bloods. I'm so sad right now as at 58 I should still be healthy. If they could stop this severe bleeding I would be in their debt forever as its unbearable. Please pray for me as I'm frightened and so very alone 😔

Thankyou so much for your reply as it gives me confidence to ask the medical people. Its very scarey as I'm a victim of ehlers danlos type 4 which affects vessels ect. I'm frightened that something ruptures and my adult children find me in a pool of blood. The thought haunts me! From what some one wrote on here you too are poorly and I will pray for you lovely lady ❤️

Cheryl, we have to be our own advocates for healthcare. You’re rightfully frightened and need your doctors to take your symptoms and conditions seriously so that you can live a full and healthy life. Doctors swear an oath as a promise to uphold the art of medicine and act in patients’ interests.

That’s all you’re asking, for them to act in your best interest to make you whole again. I hope and pray you see your doctor soon so that you can get this bleeding under control.

Write down notes about what you want to say before you make the phone call. That way you can get the serious points across when making the appointment.

You’re so sweet…thank you for being concerned about my health. My crises of leukemia and a bone marrow transplant is behind me. I’m fully recovered now and in a durable remission.
Now, make that phone call to your doctor! ☺️
