I was diagnosed with renal disease several years ago and my nephrologist asked if I could try a vegetarian diet. I agreed and went "almost vegan" -I do eat eggs from a friend's free-range hens and rarely an "accidental" dairy product in bread if I can't obtain my dairy free bread. I was able to go off dialysis and somewhat reverse my renal failure and manage my diabetes better. Two years ago I was diagnosed with gastroparesis secondary to diabetic damage to GI nerves and possibly the vagus nerve and this has complicated my meal plans since many of the veggies I previously ate I no longer can have and I now have to divide daily food intake into 5 or 6 small meals. However, kidney function continues to improve slowly and I am taking less than a tenth of the insulin I used to need.

I guess it's a matter of what works for each of us. For me, a vegetarian diet has improved my life.
