8 weeks post TKR issues

Posted by knighthawk11 @knighthawk11, May 26, 2023

Had TKR 8 weeks ago. Was doing good until 4 weeks then was doing more around the house. Then developed severe pain on inside of knee with occasional severe discomfort when walking. Seen my OS at 5 weeks X-ray was good but this pain has not gone away. He thought I just overdid something but it never stopped. Not constant just certain way my leg plants. Feels like stabbing throbbing pain. Any advice if this is normal and will it go away. Also outside knee stiff and sore when walking. Doing my PT and home excercises. Icing and elevating constantly. Thanks for any advice if this type of pain is normal at 2 months. Thanks

I am 5 months post TKR. While going through PT with a lot of pain I asked about taping and a knee brace. He said no to both; not during the healing post TKR! He is a therapist with 45 years of experience. Ask your surgeon!

Thanks for this information. Yes I would definitely check with both be proceeding.

Knee sleeve not brace was ok with my surgeon. Just a temporary fix for a specific acute pain. To be used 2-3 days only. It certainly worked.
I think most of these random pains I get happen from positions and restlessness in my sleep.

I encourage you to be patient & keep up the good work. I’m now 6 mos out and can’t really remember at 2 mos (like childbirth I guess :). The last month, there are times I forget I had surgery but it’s taken some time. I still do PT exercises 2x day at home and ice a couple times a day and I find it still helps a great deal with pain and stiffness. I can miss one day but two??? I’m back to stiffness and soreness. I was never able to get full flexion and was at 110 w effort at last PT appt. That may be as good as it gets but I’m good with that. It doesn’t prevent me from doing anything I want/need to. After a lot of work (and yes those early weeks and months of exercises are torturous!) I’m walking better than I have for years, using my Walker and cane much less, no longer needing a shower chair, etc. I’m not looking forward to first 3 weeks but I am looking forward to getting the 2nd surgery which should help to make an even greater difference. I know I started to make significant improvement after about 3 mos. I hope you’ll find the same thing. I also encourage you to visit a massage therapy and ask how you can massage your knee - or do some research online. I had some pain and pulling on the outside of my leg around my knee. Massage therapist said it was probably IT Band and did a good massage and showed me how I can do some at home. It made a huge difference and the pain and pulling soon disappeared. Just some ideas. Best wishes.

I’m told that my having both knees done at same time makes it slower. Guess I’m about where your are. Problem I have became evident today. Used my hiking stick to walk around a street fair for 2 1/2 hours. Now I don’t have the energy to do the physical therapy exercises. Getting too old I guess

Has anyone had any issues with leg length discrepancy after bilateral knee replacement?

Though aging surely plays a role, I know I hadn’t realized just how much muscle strength I had lost while I waited for surgery (4 years in all thanks to CoVid). Between the wait and related deterioration as I was able to walk and do less and became more reliant on a Walker and cane, and then the recovery required post-surgery after all the cutting and stretching of muscles and ligaments, etc. I’m still a long way from having good muscle stamina. An exercise therapist helped me to understand that and assured me it would come if I was willing to work at it. But she did say it would probably take a year. I do find it improving with the exercises but I couldn’t do 2.5 hrs of walking at a street fair. (I’d take my Walker to such an event so I could rest as needed and would be able to enjoy it more that way). I even find a significant difference by the end of the day by which my legs are tired and have much less strength. So it sounds like you’re doing well (at least by my standards 🙂 and I have confidence that, if we keep working at it, we will see continued improvement.

I planed my surgery with the expectation that it would take a year. The goal is a trip to Europe and walking on cobblestones. Feeling impatient lately. I have to remember that I am definitely getting my life back one little bit at a time. You are right! I’m getting older so I can’t do it all anymore. It’s funny though that I can do aerobic dance again and it’s easier than walking long distances. Today I’m going to the warm pool and take it easier .

I am at 8 1/2 months out....my leg and knee still get sore and stiff but it does get better over time. I'm hoping by a year I'm much better. I recently went to Universal in Florida and one day I actually walked over 17,000 steps and 7 miles. It was nice as each night I cold get in the pool and hot tub at the hotel before bed, but my leg was sore. I do walk slower as well and getting up and down out of a chair can be hard due to my thigh muscles being sore. Have you tried wearing knee sleeve...I wore this every day when I did lots of walking and it does help. Be patient with yourself and as you progress it will get better. I agree it's hard when you so want to get back to where you were but it will happen over time.
