Are you taking Reclast for osteoporosis?

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Jul 21, 2020

Two years ago I was diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis because of the prednisone I was on for my autoimmune disease. I started taking Fosamax (a bisphosphonate) and had no problems. Today, the endocrinologist suggested that I switch to Reclast for 3 yearly infusions. Has anyone else taken this drug? What side effects have you had?
Thanks

@windyshores, I am so happy to have found him thxs to this forum here. He is amazing, his understanding of this disease, his compassionate heart, his book (that I ordered today) is a godsend 🥰. He has helped me to STOP worrying. Thx for all you do too!

I am still having huge side effects -it has been 5 months since I had the Reclast infusion. I can't sleep, I am weak and dizzy, muscle spasms, my joints ache constantly. I put on 8 lbs the first month after the infusion and cannot get it off! I exercise every day but it is painful. I have headaches and earaches. I am so tired of feeling so crummy. I will never have another infusion of this poison.

I’ve had three infusions of Reclast with no side effects. My doctor always has me get an infusion of what I call water before the Reclast infusion. I think that really helps and makes a difference!

I’ve had somewhat similar experiences- been 6 months and definitely less aches and do feel stronger. But some sleep problems still, hands feel stiff & swollen but rings still fit?
I don’t know…
Hoping for full resolution in more time.
I read a recent study that said side effects were greatly reduced with 500 ml + IV solution given with Reclast. And that half dose was just as effective as the full 5 mg.
Hope you feel better soon!

The suggestions of having IV hydration is extremely helpful. Thank you both. And the dose reduction. My doc wants to do 20% but it is good to know that 50% is as effective as 100%. Is it possible to share a link to that study?

I took Forteo for 2 years from 2016 - 2018 and had fantastic results, moving from severe post-menopausal osteoporosis to osteopenia or better. Unfortunately, I wasn't approved for Prolia afterwards and I didn't want to go on bisphosphonates, so I tried to maintain my bone density through exercise, giving up sodas, etc. Because of other health issues (brain surgery!), I let things slide to a point this year when my numbers were as bad as or worse than they were in 2016. I was approved for Tymlos, which is more convenient than Forteo was, since it doesn't have to be refrigerated. I haven't had a follow-up scan yet (it's been only 5 months), but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. There are no easy answers for treatment, unfortunately.

@tucsonnancy thank you so much for posting this. I am sorry that happened to you but your story is very helpful to me and probably others. I am about to finish my first 18 months of Tymlos and like you, have had excellent gains. I have several spinal fractures and do not want to go backwards! Good luck with the Tymlos!

Read about COMB protocol for osteoporosis. I started it a few months ago. It’s all vitamins and minerals. They did a study and it showed improvement in the osteoporosis. It does not shut down your osteoblasts and osteoclasts as Fosamax does. Please do research and read everything. Make sure to use the correct strontium (citrate). You have to do wright bearing exercise. Elliptical is perfect. I will repeat my BD in one year. I will have to self pay but that’s all right. Good luck everyone on your quest for good health.

@windyshores , I’m going for my Tymlos training today and eager to begin treatment but concerned about the side effects. What have you experienced and how do you manage them?
