Problem with dairy related to milk fat and not lactose?

Posted by memcb @memcb, Feb 15, 2016

I am 69 years old and have had a problem with dairy product since I was about 40. I used to eat ice cream by the half gallon and down Strawberry milkshakes weekly, until suddenly I had a reaction (intense cramping and diarrhea) one day after drinking a strawberry milkshake from In-N-Out. Since I had never had that reaction before, I decided to try one about a week later, but closer to home:-) and same reaction. Then I realized all my favorite Ice Cream was affecting me too. I assumed it was Lactose Intolerance developed later in life (use to drink a quart of milk at a time almost every day after school as a kid). I am especially sensitive to butter now too. I love Lobster, but cannot tolerate melted butter. I seem to be OK with Yogurt and small portions of Non-Fat milk (Starbucks Non-fat Latte).

As a result of what I have been researching on Lactose Intolerance, I am wondering if my problem is not more related to milk FAT, rather than lactose(?) I read that non-fat milk contains the same amount of lactose as whole milk, but I can tolerate (some) non-fat milk, but NOT whole milk or cream. My question relates to Whey Protein, which is high in lactose, according to what I have been reading. I have used it to make protein-fortified smoothies for quite a while with no ill effects. I also add low-fat Greek yogurt, and eat it by itself often with no adverse reaction. I have eliminated butter from my diet, and though it is hard to eat an airplane meal without cheese being injected in just about everything (including eggs), I avoid cheese as much as possible.

I am now wondering if there is another allergy I have to milk fat, and not necessarily lactose, and if there is a way to test or such a thing; and, if detected, can it be cured or treated.....OR, do I just keep avoiding butter, cheese, whole milk, cream (and cream-based sauces) for the rest of my life. It is certainly not the end of the world to continue avoiding these things, but it would be great to be able to eat things I used to enjoy. Ay suggestions would be helpful!

Hello, I can't remember my log in info and I am really sick right now. Stay
away from any product that has dairy in it. Stick to everything fresh or
that you know has no dairy for at least a month and see if it helps. Dairy
can be hid in many ingredients so stay with fresh fruits, vegys and fresh
meat. If you buy processed make sure it has a u in a o on the package and
that means it has no meat or dairy in it. It's a Jewish dietary thing that
took lots of research on my part but has been a huge help for processed
foods. God Bless
Kendra Kay :)
@kendrakay, I thought you might appreciate connecting with other Connect member who are living with gastroparesis. It can be good to share with others, especially when first diagnosed.

I can’t digest milk which includes the Lactose and the Milk Protein that hides itself under many names. It seems that might be your issues as well. Mine started off with being able to eat some products and not others. Once I removed all dairy lactose and the milk proteins
Then tried to introduce later I had a bad reaction. Yogurt is easier to digest because it has enzymes that help with digestion. It seems to be you should get off all dairy because if you have a problem and remain on dairy you are creating an inflammation problem that
Could lead to disease. I would try to go off all dairy in all forms. Now the only thing you might try is raw milk that is unpasteurized at specialty stores because they still have enzymes to aid in digestion. However if you are allergic to the milk protein even raw milk will effect you. You might consider Almond milk or Flax Seed/Hemp Milk at great choices.

Welcome back @ccosci Thanks for replying. Do you find any difference between cow's mild and sheep's milk? My husband can digest sheep's milk, but not milk product from cows or goats.

@memcb, How are you doing? Any new discoveries with your dairy intolerance?

I can’t do any dairy from any source not even raw. I drink Flax milk that is it.
