Popping in throat not neck
So I had this popping in my throat start 2 1/2 weeks before Feb 23 2023. A Cyst came about on the let side of my throat and 2 days later popping occurred on the lower right side of my throat. Feb 23rd, I had surgery to remove the cyst and for four days after surgery there wasn’t any popping.
The popping returned and for the last 3 months the surgeon keeps telling me I’m fine and don’t need any further tests since the surgery was done. I let him know the popping in my throat has caused me pain and still is. It’s caused my tung to feel weird and sometimes go numb on the left or right side of my tung. My neck goes numb when it pops some days and it’s also increased acid reflux since this all started. It has also struck nerves send tingling through my left jaw and low back of my neck.
It pops primarily on the left side where the cyst was removed and right under my jaw. I’ve had to push the ENT surgeon that did the work to get me another CAT scan and now a neurologist appointment after he keeps telling me I’m fine even with all these complications after the surgery. The surgeon talks to me with arrogance and cockiness that I’m fine.
I’m at the point of feeling helpless and waking up everyday not knowing what I’m going to expect with pain or any other complications I’ve had to endure in the last 3 months. If anyone could give me some type of insight on why I’m having such rough popping in the throat, anything ideas would be helpful.

So update on this. Bone fragments were found in my CT scan from the surgery I had in February. It is what has been causing me nerve pain and clicking in the throat alongside of tingling in the tung.
This is very good news I hope now that this hidden problem has been found your pain and clicking cease to torment you.

1 Reaction@nyctrin Thanks for your response. Is this something you can live with, or will there be a procedure to remove them? What did your doctor recommend?
I’m pushing to get these removed. It looks like there is about 6 bone shards and one of them shifted by my thyroid by the looks of the CT scan. I’m more than happy to upload these pictures.
The Ct scans below doesn’t show the 6 I was talking about because it was shown at a different angle but bone fragments is not something you want to live with. Sharp objects like this can make their way to veins and arteries.
I’ve added the most recent CT Scans showing the fragments. To me they are very clear to see. I’m suppose to get a phone call Monday to setup a date for surgery. I’m starting to have pain though on the right side of my throat now along with the left side so this sucks and hoping I can get surgery sooner than later.
Spoke with another ENT and he thinks those are titanium clips. Even though usually those don’t move around, I can feel the one in the upper throat.
I did confirm they used clips instead of just tying off the nerves.
Hey I know it’s been some time on this situation. After CT scans and X-rays, I had surgery today and they found almost over centimeter size calcium built up from the last surgery I had on Feb 23rd. That’s what was causing nerve pain, anxiety, and choking. My new surgeon said it look like the calcium was building around one of the titanium clips.
@nyctrin Thank you for sharing your results of what you’ve learned. I’m glad you found an answer. Did your surgeon think this problem is solved now or could it happen again? There are other situations where some patients grow bone around a surgical implant such as an artificial spinal disc. Did your surgeon think this had anything to do with titanium? Some patients have immune responses to foreign materials in their body. How is your recovery going after the surgery?
In re-reading your first post, I wanted to say that you’ve done an excellent job in advocating for yourself. I hope the attitude of your surgeon improved and he is willing to listen. I know this is difficult to do as a patient. Surgeons want good results from their procedures without complications that could reflect on them. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason for something.
If you are a patient who reacts to titanium, there is a practice in Texas that treats this called the Environmental Health Center Dallas. I had titanium plates from an ankle fracture that caused pain, hives, and skin discoloration and I had them removed which resolved the issues.
