Anyone with CRPS been to Mayo Pain Rehabilitation Centers?

Posted by connie2023 @connie2023, Jun 5, 2023

I am considering going to the 3 week program at the Florida Mayo Pain Management Center to help me manage my pain from CRPS in my right foot. Has anyone been there for CRPS and how was your experience and how are you doing today?

Yes. I think it was super beneficial. My best advice is the hardest part is sticking to the program after the program ends- when they say this it’s so true so stick with the routines you make as soon as you get done with the clinic and keep the routines!

Where is your CRPS? My is in my foot, so I am a little nervous about the physical conditioning part. Plus I have Thoracic Outlet syndrome in my back which triggers a huge amount of pain when I attempt to do things with my upper body. Do they take into account your specific challenges when they design a physical conditioning program for you or is it one size fits all?

Hello and welcome, @connie2023 - Green light all the way! Yes, yes, and yes, you most definitely should pursue going to the Mayo Pain Rehabilitation Center, especially in Florida where Dr. Sletten runs the program. Although, I do not know of my fellow classmates diagnosis and reasons for being there, (because we were asked to not discuss as was considered pain behaviors) I do know after having been through the PRC, that what you experience as a result of CRPS is exactly what the program helps - the "cycle of pain".

Please meet @ldb and @tallyteresa, they have graduated and speak highly of how the PRC changed theirs lives. Here is a beneficial discussion you may wish to read:

I conclude that those 3 weeks were the most meaning and influential weeks of my life. Yes, I am better, I am stronger - physically, behaviorally and emotionally. You mention weaning off hydrocodone - 100% you will, and I did, too. That is a huge step and you should be proud for wanting to discontinue its use, and find a better way for chronic pain management. Not gonna lie...it's tough stuff. The program is intense, but oh, so rewarding and awe-inspiring.

Full disclosure, you will still and always have pain, but you will retrain your brain (where the pain stems from anyway) to lessen, ignore, and work around it by placing it's value to the back seat after figuring out that life goes on and life's quality is worth investing in.

The PRC will take your specific challenges into consideration and design a physical therapy plan that benefits you. Graded exposure, moderation, modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, sleep hygiene, bio-feedback are just some of the areas of focus.

@fightingfibro0505 has offered insight as to the challenges of life and health that may lie ahead after graduating. In all honesty, the PRC is a lifestyle that you really need to stay all in on forever if you want to reap it's benefits. Dr. Sletten encourages us to remember that we will be much better prepared when challenges occur.

Please ask any questions you have, I'm happy to help. Do you feel confident to apply yet?

PLEASE go 🙂

Life isn't easy with chronic diseases, but the PRC ABSOLUTELY SAVED MY LIFE in 2010. I was dying and I knew it. God gave me 14 years back. I was on 300 mg of morphine and 100mcg of fentanly and I was DYING! I knew it, so I went...scared to death, and gave up all my narcotics.

You will come out the backside changed, and you will live again. You will have pain, but you learn to live with it.

I have been blessed to see our grandkids grow and I would have missed that. You can do this.

God bless your journey!

Greetings

They will push you to see where you are at physically. I have several painful movement disorders, and all they asked was that I try. I did ok, and so will you.

My favorite saying right now is " You can't treat movement disorders, without movement.*. I have 2 different conditions. One demands that I keep moving. The other screams at me when I move too much. Find your boundaries, and then see where they will lead you.

God bless your journey
