Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

@kcoxict

I'm scheduled to have reverse total shoulder replacement on left arm in August. Right now I have really good range of motion going up and good use of arm except for lateral movement and the arm is weak. I'm very worried whether I'm doing the right thing. My rotator cuff is torn fully through. Surgeon feels it is the right decision. I am in pain quite a lot and have been for about 2 1/2 years. Can anyone give me their experiences with this surgery? Ten years ago I had rotator cuff repair done on the right for massive tear and a bicep repair but surgeon says the left is irreparable. Help!!!! I'm very nervous about whether I'm making the right move.

Best thing I have had!! Just have good PT and follow Doctor orders.
Had mine done in 2021 no problems.

I had a RSR 2 years ago. My movement was very limited and I had alot of pain. The surgery was amazing. I am pain free and have full range of motion. It's the best working part of me.

FYI the rotator "cuff" is made up of four muscles. The supraspinatus is the most common to be torn. Lateral movement is always the worst. There's no way to strengthen that shoulder in its present condition. I speak from my own experience and also as a massage therapist. I don't even remember any significant post-op pain. Take a deep breath and go for it. It will continue to get worse if you don't.

Good afternoon @kcoxict. My reverse total shoulder replacement was 10 years ago. My surgeon called my rotator cuff......"the grand canyon of holes" after the first effort. He also tried a cadaver graft and it was a failure .

The total reverse was the last option and it went well. Did you know that you can now have a robotic surgery where the replacement has been specially designed to fit "your" shoulder? I am sure that will give you a better fit and stronger placement. If anything, that would be the item with the greatest importance. It will definitely guarantee a solid placement and a more accurate surgery.

I hope your pain finds that its journey in your body is over. Just work on your ROM. Mine is a little off so I look funny eating an ice cream cone. However, no pain makes life much more liveable. Good luck to you.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris

I had mine about 7 weeks ago, 1 Aug. 2024. I’ve had no pain after the surgery. I was in pain before the SURGERY! Pain is gone. I’m doing PT right now. I am having a big problem with my external rotation! I see the orthopedic doctor next week. I’m not at all sure what is causing it. Once I find out I will post it.

Massive rotator tear and osteoarthritis. I had no choice but for tRSA.
