I am in the process of choosing which manufacturer of cochlear impla

@robogo That's a great, but difficult question as it seems that most people who have cochlear implants are happy with what they have. All three brands, Cochlear, AB, and MedEl have excellent products.

I chose Cochlear because they were developing implants that were compatible with other audio devices that I use and they have always been forward in design. Meaning that even though I was implanted in 2005, all of the processor advances have been compatible with my original implant. No need for a new implant when a processor upgrade is available. I think the others are that way now too.

Back then, I asked a lot of questions of people who had CIs and why they had chosen what they chose. None of them were disappointed in their choice. I certainly am not, but I did opt for Cochlear because I knew more people with that brand than the other brands, and because I knew them both before and after they had the CI surgery done, I was well aware of the improvement in their communication skills.

Some implant centers promote a specific brand, others don't. If I was just starting on this journey, I would want to know my surgeon's preference and why, (if they would disclose that). I'd ask how many they have done for each brand.

I will say that Cochlear has been on the cutting edge of advanced technology that works with assistive technology that goes beyond hearing aids and CIs. They recognized the need for accessories like TV streamers, phone support and their wonderful Mini Mics that can be helpful in noisy settings. They have also been very helpful when support has been needed to upgrade processors and/or accessories. They will go to bat for you with the insurance companies if need be. I'm pretty sure that AB and MedEl will too.

It's good to ask questions and do some research. Do you personally know any other people who have cochlear implants?

At this point. I don't know anybody with CI, and I hope to speak
to several. I am looking for a surgeon in Tucson, that is my closest city, still 3 hours drive.

I live in western New York, near Rochester ,and also chose Cochlear, because my audiologist was most familiar with that brand, because they are the oldest cochlear implant company (and have had the least number of recalls) and because of the additional devices available. I have the mini mic which is a tremendous help when my husband and I are in the car, and the TV streamer which is also great. I have found Cochlear's support system invaluable. Their Cochlear Copilot app offers information, tips, practice drills for auditory rehab and more. Users can also access one on one help with a knowledgeable support technician. Several people I know through our local HLAA chapter have Cochlear as well and are very pleased with their CIs.
I have heard people say that AB is better for music recognition but still lacks a natural sound.
I hope you are familiar with induction loops for large venues. With the telecoil feature, sound within the loop travels from a microphone directly into the hearing aid and CI with no background noise. What a wonderful invention!
I have one CI which I received in 2021 and a Resound hearing aid in the other ear. The combination works very well for me.
