So sick after first round of chemo: What can I do to help?
I had a successful Whipple operation on stage 1 pancreas cancer on January 31, 2023 did not experience any pain after surgery or doing recovery. No pain meds needed! Completed first round of chemo and have been so sick and meds don’t help. Asked to go off chemo but still have continued with nausea, no appetite, headache, fatigue, chills, fever. what could be going on?

Oh he’s fully aware of what a hard time I’ve had with the first round. The nurse told him on both days that I was there for the hydration. Pretty certain the 5-FU rate was 100%. I’m 58. No one mentioned it being a lesser rate for any reason. I assume the dose goes by your weight more than anything. The nurse also did not mention lowering it even though they knew I had ended up in the ER to get IV hydration on Monday night and back at the cancer center to receive IV hydration twice more (Tuesday & Thursday), so 3 x total for IV hydration in one week due to so much nausea, vomiting & lack of appetite. If I am this ill again after this coming round, I will demand it to be lowered. I cannot tolerate feeling that sick for 2 weeks in a row. I’m very nervous about this coming round. 😔
Had a strange reaction to irinotecan, felt entirely weak, couldn't function, no nausea or vomiting but my blood pressure was unusually low. I live alone and called an ambulance for myself. Felt lousy for almost two weeks and wasn't sure I could take another dose so my oncologist and I worked out a change. I told him I would rather die than go through the experience again. Because of the BRCA1, I wanted to continue with oxyplatinum, so I got 5-FU and oxy. The Aloxi and Emend premeds have controlled nausea, just feel slightly off at the end of the infusion and Compazine has worked well for you. I have gone from borderline resectible to resectible. Surgery scheduled for June 21st after having 11 cycles of oxy and 5-FU. When the oxy gave me an alleric reaction, my next treatment was 5-FU alone, I asked to continue with the Emend. Hope your oncologist will work with you on getting your symptoms controlled.
June 21st! This is coming soon! I hope you will be able to stop the chemo and have your body in excellent condition for the surgery. I think healing will come faster in that way.
I find it necessary to be a determined self advocate. I let my oncologist know if I had to continue the initial chemo I would rather not be treated and just die. He was very understanding and we did work out a change. I got another 10 rounds of chemo and managed very well.
He tested my blood to see if I’m overly sensitive to the drugs. He is ruling out reasons why I was so sick after the first round. He said if I am as sick this time they can lower the dose. They are trying Emend prior to my infusion today.
I'm glad you posted. I have been thinking about you today and wondering how things went with chemo. I hope the Emend helps; it does me. And I hope the side effects are less this time. Please keep us posted.
No nausea but am still getting the infusion. So far I broke out in a rash on my forehead today from the Oxaliplatin. 🙁
Wow. Yet another side effect of oxyplatin! Mean stuff. Glad you are able to stick with the infusions. Keep us in the loop on what works for you.
How are you doing today? I hope the Emend has helped and that you're experiencing some rest and relief after the last couple of weeks and yesterday's chemo. When you feel like it, please let us know.
Thank you for asking! I have no nausea yet but am on the home infusion day one. Likely high on steroids yet.
I woke up with horrid tingling in my fingers this morning. I took some Boiron homeopathic medicine called Kali Phosphoricum & the tingling ceased within literally 10 minutes. I highly recommend that.
