Neurosurgeons performing disc replacement surgery @MAYO, Jacksonville

Thank you for your reply, I miss spoke. I'm looking at Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement (ACDR), not Anterior Cervical Disc Fusion (ACDF), yes Medicare will cover the fusion. I'm wanting the artificial disc, not another fusion.

@alexis7 where do you plan to get the artificial disc replacement surgery, if you were to have the surgery? which surgeon?
I have been researching and trying to find someone who specializes in that type of surgery in the USA. So far I didn't have much luck.

There are a few neurosurgeons in the Dallas area who do them. One only does cervical not lumbar. I live in a suburb east of Dallas, that was the extent of my search. I read their bios and my pain management doctor referred one.

Dr. David Barnett in Dallas but he will only do Cervical. Dr. Jessica Shellock in Plano will do lumbar too and I bet some of her partners at Texas Back Institute do artificial disc replacement. Read her bio on the their website, "she participated in a number of FDA studies evaluating new designs."
I don't know where you live but I'm sure you could find someone near you that does artificial disc replacement, it's not a new science.

We are in Miami, we were planning to go to Mayo Jacksonville. Initial interaction was not the greatest. They said we don’t take your insurance and you may have to pay $100, 000 upfront. In fact, I called, my insurance covers as out of network and we may have to pay more as compared to in network. I rather go to Johns Hopkins as I had a very pleasant interaction and a very good prior experience.
Mayo may have good doctors; so does other places. I rather spend money where they care. My prior experience with Mayo few years ago was also so so

If you know which artificial disc you’re interested in, try contacting the rep & they may help you locate a doctor near you that uses it. Your doctor may even be able to refer you to someone close.

I just had five artifical discs implanted into my neck. I had this done in Germany who are the leaders in ADR. I live in Canada and they are approved for two cervical and two lumbar ADR 's ...as is the USA. I paid for it myself but I have read that some USA recipients did have theirs paid for by their American insurance plans. Germany has been doing this for 15 years and are cheaper than the states. If you are going that route, they are worth checking out. You can send your imaging etc. and receive a free consult. Then you can request a quote and you will have all the info you need to make a medical and financial decision and of course check with any private insurance provider you might have.

I'm sorry Alexis but your comment made me gasp in horror. It comes from a place of ignorance, or rather the lack of understanding about artifical discs. The surgeon is the only one that can select a disc. It isn't one size fits all. The decision is based on your MRI and medical history. There are over 30 artifical discs although surgeons will have their favourites, they are still customised. I have just had five cervical ADR's in Germany after having done extensive research. Germany are the leaders in artifical disc replacement and have been doing it for 15 years. They are also cheaper than the USA. Cheaper doesn't mean inferior. The USA is known for its exorbitant medical costs. I would recommend looking into Pro Spine in Germany. They will assess your imaging, and give you an estimate.
