Esophageal Cancer after Bariatric Surgery

Good morning Don so my dad found out yesterday he has a esophagus cancer and they admitted him to the hospital and now they’re waiting to put a stent in his esophagus. Have you ever heard of that they don’t know what stage is yet so hopefully he’ll find out soon yesterday he weighed 126 pounds he was really really skinny.

Good morning. No I have not heard of putting a stent in esophagus. I'm guessing that the cancer has damaged the wall of the esophagus requiring stent to direct flow of food and liguids to stomach. I was stage 4 due to tumor in esophagus and affected lymph nodes near by. They can do endoscopy and take biopsy and PET scan to better determine extent of cancer and what best treatment plan is. Hopefully it was caught early enough. Please let us know what the plans are?

So you are cleared of cancer now stage four is a pretty bad one isn’t it?

Yes after last endosopy and PET scan I was declared cancer free. I go back in 3 months for retest but no other treatment planned. In my case there was no damage to the esophagus so I probably would have been stage 3 but the local lymph node involvement pushed me to stage 4. Don't worry about the stage as much as what the recommended plan is. I had 28 days of radiation and chemo which worked. I'll be anxious to here what your plan is?

I hope your Dad has favorable results, I’m an 18 mo cancer survivor and I had the same symptoms before diagnosis. Be proactive with your oncologist and be an advocate for your Daddy he needs you!

Hoping the stent goes well. I’m just being honest not negative, I had the stent put in and it was supposed to go in before treatment but didn’t happen until I was a couple of weeks into chemo/ radiation and it actually was the worst I felt during my entire treatment before surgery. It had to be removed and a j tube had to be placed for feeding. As I stated hoping not an issue for your Dad and much needed relief I’m sure. If I had to do it again I would have gone with the feeding tube. Your In my prayers and hoping for a speedy and swift healing for your Dad and much needed relief for you as well!

I had the Roux-en-Y surgery in 1985. It was very difficult in the beginning I couldn’t sit and eat even with tiny bites. My stomach would cramp up and I had to go get rid of what I had just ate. This went on for a few years. I never lost as much weight as I had hoped, but was thankful for what I did lose in 1997 I had bouts of heartburn like symptoms With hematemesis went to a bariatric surgeon who stated I needed a revision also bloodwork showed I had Barrett’s esophagus. with that surgery, I barely made it through. I don’t remember a lot of what went on, but was in the hospital nearly 2 weeks. This surgery left me with a tiny pinhole at the suture line. I was too weak to walk, and was finally sent Home and lived two months in a recliner with a pick line a Jackson Pratt, drain IV nutrition. I could have a few ice chips To keep my mouth moist, but I could not swallow the water after the ice had melted. Thankfully, I begin to regain strength every four weeks I was going back to The hospital for a swallowing test to see if the pinhole had closed but each time it had not. I was a nurse and was just tired of being in the situation. I was in the JP drain had quit putting out much of anything over a few weeks. my surgeon finally agreed to remove it in the next swallowing test. The pinhole had closed off good news, but a little too late because if we had removed it sooner I would’ve been out of the reclining on my feet sooner I sympathize with anyone that’s going through this type of surgery. For any reason other than a health issue that at least two surgeons I agree this is the best route.
